Islanders Beat SFA in Overtime

NACOGDOCHES - Sophomore LaToya Mills scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds but it wasn't enough as SFA lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 72-69, Tuesday night at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks are now 5-15 (.250) on the season.
It was a back-n-forth contest that saw six ties and 16 lead changes. In the first half, neither team took advantage of its opportunities as the Ladyjacks turned the ball over 15 times but the Islanders were only able to convert them into seven points, while SFA was only able to turn the Islanders' 11 turnovers into six points. But despite the turnovers and only shooting 9-of-30 (.300) in the first half, the Ladyjacks only trailed, 25-21, at the intermission.
After falling behind by six early in the second half, the Ladyjacks rattled off 11 unanswered points to take a five-point advantage, 40-35, with 11:10 remaining in the contest. Sophomore Kendria Smith led the charge with her 12 points and five rebounds. But the Islanders responded with a 6-0 run, to reclaim the lead 41-40, behind Terra Andrews' 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The Islanders extended their lead to five points late in the game but struggled at the free-throw line and couldn't put SFA away. The Islanders were 14-of-32 (.438) from the free-throw line, including a 1-of-6 (.167) performance in the final minute which left the door wide open for SFA, and freshman Nikki Carr walked right through the opening. With only five seconds remaining, Carr buried a three-pointer to tie the game at 60 and send it into overtime. Carr finished the game with 11 points and five rebounds.
But the Islanders were too much in overtime, outscoring SFA, 12-9 in the extra period for the victory.
Sophomore Britany Vinson scored 12 points on 4-of-8 (.500) shooting from behind the arc. Freshman Jennifer Simpson scored eight points and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in only the second start of her career.
The Ladyjacks return to action Saturday when they travel to Arlington, Texas, to take on the Lady Mavericks. The game is slated to get under way at 3 p.m., from Texas Hall.
