Ladyjacks Fall to McNeese State in Overtime

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team dropped its third-straight Southland Conference game, falling to McNeese State 89-80 Saturday. The Ladyjacks are now 8-11 overall and 8-4 in Southland Conference action.
It was a game dominated by the offenses. The Ladyjacks were 28-of-53 (.528) in the contest, while McNeese State finished the game 31-73 (.425). The game stayed close throughout as neither team could mount more than a six-point advantage in the first half. After trailing by six with 4:45 in the first half, the Ladyjacks went on a 13-2 run to close out the half, leading 37-36 at the intermission.
The second half was almost a mirror image of the first as neither team could gain more than a five-point advantage. The Ladyjacks built a five-point lead with 4:39 remaining in the game behind freshman Britany Vinson's career-high 19 points. But McNeese State closed the gap to two points, 75-73, with 46 seconds remaining. The Cowgirls got the ball back and tied the game at 75 with only five seconds left. SFA couldn't score on its final possession and headed to its first overtime game of the season.
In the overtime period, McNeese State was led by Kellie Burbridge who scored 27 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. The Ladyjacks were unable to gain an advantage in the overtime and were hurt by 29 turnovers, falling to 15-7 all-time in overtime games.
Freshman Kirby Killingsworth scored a career-high 18 points, while classmate Kendria Smith added a career-high 12 points. Senior Amy Collins finished the game with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday Feb.13, when they return home to face Nicholls State. The game against the Colonels is set to tipoff at 8:15 p.m.
