NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team jumped out to a 16-point first-half advantage and rode the lead to victory, knocking off Southeastern Louisiana, 63-54, Saturday night. The Ladyjacks improved to 10-11 (.476) on the year and 10-4 (.714) in Southland Conference play.
The Ladyjacks connected on five of their first seven shots jumping out to an early 8-0 advantage. SFA pushed its lead to 24-8 with 7:17 remaining in the first half. The Lady Lions battled back to cut the deficit to only nine at the break, riding the back of LaSha Stover who finished the game with a team-high 14 points.
After a cold start to the second half, SLU cut the Ladyjack advantage to five points with 10:23 remaining. But the Ladyjacks responded by going on an 11-6 run to push its advantage back to double-digits, 52-40. Freshman Britany Vinson (Prattville, Ala.) paced the Ladyjacks' attack with her 15 points. Classmate Kirby Killingsworth (Longview, Texas) added 10 points on 3-of-5 five shooting from behind the three-point arc. Killingsworth is now 10th all-time in school history with her 32 three-pointers.
Southeastern Louisiana cut the lead to five points, 59-54, with less than a minute to play. But the Ladyjacks hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The Ladyjacks return to action Thursday when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to take on Lamar. The game is slated to get underway at 4 p.m., from the Montagne Center.
