BEAUMONT, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (7-8, 2-3) lost to the Lamar Cardinals (11-1, 1-4) in game two of their three-game series, 9-3.
Neither team could score through the first two innings as Lumberjacks starter Dylan Mulcahy did a good job keeping the Lamar Cardinals bats quiet. In the top of the third, the Lumberjacks were able to get some traffic on the bases. Ben Hoshizaki would rip a one-out single to center and Josh Ibe would continue his torrid start to the year, smoking a double into the left-center gap to score Hoshizaki. After Mark Henning reached on a hit-by-pitch, a wild pitch would advance Henning and Ibe one base, putting runners on second and third. Julian Swift would come through with a sacrifice fly, scoring Ibe and putting the 'Jacks up 2-0.
Lamar would respond quickly, as they scored three runs in the bottom of the third and another five in the bottom of the fourth to give the Cardinals a commanding 8-2 lead. SFA would chip away in the top half of the fifth inning. After Austin Cadroy led off the inning with a walk, Hoshizaki would notch his third hit in as many at-bats with a double into left-center, putting runners at second and third. Cadroy would later score on a wild pitch to make the score 8-3 in favor of Lamar.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lamar would tack on one more to extend their lead to 9-3. Some great relief pitching by Jonathan Valdez would keep the Cardinals from scoring any more runs, but the 'Jacks couldn't manufacture any more offense and would fall to Lamar 9-3.
Peyton Havard (2-1) recorded the win, while Dylan Mulcahy (1-1) lost his first game of the year.
