BEAUMONT, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (6-7, 1-2 SLC) hit the road for only the second time this year as they travel to Beaumont to take on the Lamar Cardinals (10-4, 0-3 SLC) in a three-game series.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The SFA Lumberjacks come into this series against Lamar at 6-7 overall and 1-2 in Southland Conference play. They lost their SLC opening series last weekend to New Orleans at home. The 'Jacks lost a close game one before responding with a run-rule win over the Privateers, 14-4. Unfortunately, they lost another close one on Sunday, 3-2. They got back into the win column on Wednesday against Huston-Tillotson, winning the midweek game 10-3.
The 'Jacks are led on offense by Josh Ibe, as the big first baseman has been on fire to start the year. He's hitting .448 with a 1.526 OPS, both of which lead the team. He also has three home runs and 16 RBI, both of which also lead the team. River Curs has also been very productive, as his batting average (.408), hits (13), on-base percentage (.537), runs (11), and stolen bases (4) are all second on the team. Mark Henning had a great game against the Rams on Wednesday, going three for three with five RBI and two walks. His bases-clearing triple that brought home three runs in the sixth inning broke the game open for the Lumberjacks. On the year, Henning is hitting .324 with a 1.011 OPS, nine RBI, and one home run. On the pitching side for the 'Jacks, Cody Templeton will get the ball in game one, looking to build on his stellar start to the year. Last Friday against UNO, Templeton threw a season-high 7.1 innings, allowing only two earned runs and four hits while striking out six batters. So far this season, Templeton is sporting a 2.21 ERA and a .71 WHIP. He's also leading the 'Jacks with 20.1 innings pitched and 19 strikeouts. His .192 batting average against is second on the team. Not to be outdone is Dylan Mulcahy, who will be toeing the rubber in game two for the Lumberjacks. Against the Privateers last Saturday, he pitched five innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out five batters. His 1.93 ERA leads all starters for SFA and is second on the team, while his .84 WHIP is second only to Templeton. Jack James, Jonathan Valdez, and Reid Boyett have been steady out of the pen. James sports a 1.69 ERA that leads the team, while Boyett has thrown 12.2 innings out of the bullpen at a 2.84 ERA. Valdez has a 2.70 ERA on the year, fourth among Lumberjacks.
A Look at the Cardinals
The Lamar Cardinals come into their first home conference series at 10-4 overall and 0-3 in the SLC. Lamar lost its conference-opening series against UTRGV, getting swept in Edinburg. They did get some momentum back on Tuesday, though, as they beat Rice in Houston.
Lamar boasts a productive lineup, having three guys hitting over .400 on the year and six over .300. Sophomore Damien Ruiz leads the Cardinals in batting average (.464), runs (24), hits (26), doubles (10), and OPS (1.317). His 14 RBI are also tied for the team lead. Brayden Evans has also been on fire to start the year, hitting .340 with a 1.021 OPS. His three long balls lead the team, while his 14 RBI are tied with Ruiz for the team lead. Seniors Heladio Moreno and Zane Spinn have been hot, both hitting over .400. On the pitching side for the Cardinals, Riely Hunsaker and Chris Olivier have been dominant. Hunsaker leads the team with a 1.26 ERA, while Olivier has thrown 14.2 innings with a 2.45 ERA. On the season, their pitching staff sports a 3.95 ERA and a .244 batting average against.
