NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (7-11, 2-5) dropped game one against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (14-3, 4-0) tonight, 4-3.
The story coming into this game was the pitcher's duel, as 'Jacks starter Cody Templeton and his 1.53 ERA went against Lions right-hander Brennan Stuprich and his 0.75 ERA. This held true through the first two innings as neither team could generate much offense.
The Lumberjacks would open up the scoring in the bottom of the third. Isaiah Garnica would double down the left field line to start the inning and then advance to third on Austin Cadroy's sacrifice bunt. Ben Hoshizaki would then extend his hitting streak to six games with a single up the middle, scoring Garnica and putting SFA up 1-0.
After another scoreless inning by Templeton, SFA would extend their lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Josh Ibe led off the inning with his fifth home run of the year, smashing a ball over the left-field wall. The 'Jacks would then tack on another run in the inning, as Owen Hooper would single home Mark Henning to make it 3-0 in favor of the Lumberjacks.
In the top of the fifth, the Lions would break Cody Templeton's 13.1 inning scoreless streak, stringing together five hits and putting up four runs to put SLU in the lead, 4-3. Although he gave up the four runs, Templeton was still solid, going five innings and striking out four Lions.
The next few innings went by without either team scoring, as both teams' bullpens pitched lights out. SFA relievers Reid Boyett and Jack James pitched great, throwing four combined innings without allowing a run.
Although they got runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth innings, the Lumberjacks were unable to bring home another run and they would fall to the Lions, 4-3.
Cody Templeton (2-1) lost his first game of the season, while Brennan Stuprich (5-0) recorded the win.
