Ladyjacks Take Down No. One Seeded Southeastern Louisiana to Secure 17th Southland Conference Tournament Championship

LAKE CHARLES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team (29-5, 16-4 SLC) matched up against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (26-5, 19-1 SLC) with a chance to go dancing in the NCAA Tournament on the line.
SLU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 7:46 left in the first quarter. Key Roseby knocked down two free throws to bring SFA within three, 7-4. Both teams traded blows until back-to-back threes from Trinity Moore and Avery VanSickle gave the Ladyjacks their first lead of the game, 13-11 with 3:57 left in the first quarter. Harmanie Dominguez inched closer to the single season three-point record with a three-pointer that brought the SFA lead back to four, 16-12. Both teams made free throws at the end of the first quarter, but the 'Jacks went into the first quarter break with a slim 18-17 lead.
VanSickle started off the second quarter with a three-pointer that was followed by a pair of free throws from Faith Blackstone, 23-17. SLU cut the lead down to three with a three-pointer before both defenses held each offense scoreless for two minutes until a jumper from Roseby broke the scoring drought, 25-20 with 5:49 left. Back-to-back layups from the Lions cut the lead to one, 25-24 with 4:37 left in the first half. The Lions knotted the game up at 27 off a made free throw with 1:34 left. VanSickle tied the game back up at 29 with a pair of free throws before SLU made a buzzer beater three to end the first half and take a 32-29 lead into the locker room.
The Lions made a layup to extend their lead but once again the defenses took over as neither team scored for the next two and a half minutes. SLU broke the scoring drought with a layup to take a 36-29 lead with 6:56 left in the third. SFA responded with an incredible 12-0 run to take a 41-36 lead with 2:10 left. The 'Jacks maintained their lead the rest of the quarter and went into the fourth quarter with a 43-39 lead.
Ten minutes separated one of these teams from the NCAA Tournament as both teams returned to the court with a renewed hunger. SLU made a layup before SFA made four consecutive free throws to extend their lead to 47-41 with 7:27 left. Back-to-back layups from the Lions cut the lead to one before a tip-in layup from Moore gave SFA a little breathing room, 49-45 with 5:55 left in the game. However, this game was far from over as SLU went on a 6-3 spurt to make it a one-point game, 52-51 with 4:19 left. The Ladyjack offense caught fire as they went on a 7-2 run and take a 59-53 lead with 1:39 left. Free throws from Moore, Dominguez and VanSickle iced the game and secured a 65-57 victory for the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks. This marked the 17th Southland Conference Title for SFA, their first since 2021.
After the game, Trinity Moore was named MVP after scoring 46 points (15.3 per game), shooting 52 percent from the floor, 41.7 from beyond the arc, and 88.2 from the free throw line. Moore also recorded 23 rebounds, five assists, nine blocks, and three steals. Joining Moore on the All-Tournament Team was Ashlyn Traylor-Walker who scored 31 points (10.1 per game), shot 40.7 percent from the floor, 33.3 from beyond the arc, and 77.8 from the free throw line. Traylor-Walker also recorded 21 rebounds, 15 assists, one block, and seven steals.
