NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (4-5, 0-0 SLC) host the University of New Orleans Privateers (4-3, 0-0 SLC) for a three-game weekend series to begin conference play.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The SFA Lumberjacks come into their first conference series at 4-5 after dropping their midweek game against the Baylor Bears, 9-4. The 'Jacks put up a good fight against the Big-12 foe, leading 4-3 after six innings, but the Bears scored six unanswered runs to win the contest. Last weekend, the 'Jacks dominated the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, sweeping the four-game series at home. They won two of those games via walk-offs. The Lumberjack bats were hot despite the cold and rainy weather as they scored 39 runs over the four-game series and totaled 51 hits.
One huge reason the 'Jacks were able to sweep UAPB was the play of designated hitter Josh Ibe, who hit .600 with a 1.722 OPS. He also slugged his second home run of the year and picked up nine RBI. On the season, Ibe is hitting .438, which is eleventh in the SLC. Ibe leads the team in OPS (1.505), SLG% (.875), OB% (.630), and home runs (two) and is tied for the team lead in RBI (10). River Curs also had a productive weekend, hitting .571 with three stolen bases. He also drew two walks and scored six runs. On the year, Curs is batting .500, which leads the team and is third in the SLC, and has a 1.275 OPS, second on the team to Ibe. He's also second on the team with three stolen bases and is leading the team in hits with 11. He leads the team with nine runs scored. On the pitching side for the 'Jacks, Cody Templeton and Dylan Mulcahy will lead the staff. They both had stellar outings against UAPB a week after dominating in their 2025 season debut against Purdue. Templeton threw seven innings, allowing three earned runs, and struck out nine batters, bringing his record to 1-0. On the young season, his ERA sits at 2.08, with 13 strikeouts compared to only two walks in his 13 innings pitched. Mulcahy also had a great outing, allowing no runs and only one hit over five innings while striking out 8 Golden Lions. His season ERA is now down to 1.00, and he has 11 strikeouts over nine innings pitched. He's also only allowed one hit on the year, as he threw four hitless innings against Purdue.
A Look at the Privateers
New Orleans comes into this weekend series sitting at 4-3 overall. They took two of three from ACC opponent Boston College last weekend before run-ruling South Alabama on Tuesday. After the series against SFA, the Privateers will play Jackson State in a midweek game before going home to continue SLC play against UTRGV.
UNO has a high-powered offense, as three guys have an OPS north of a thousand. Bryce Calloway leads the team in OPS (1.564), batting average (.500), on-base percentage (.531), home runs (5), and RBI (12). In 30 at-bats, the senior has picked up 15 hits.
