ARLINGTON, Texas. - The Stephen F. Austin Softball team (12-30, 5-9) split the midweek doubleheader against the host University of Texas at Arlington Mavericks (15-25, 6-7) as SFA claimed the first game in a thrilling 6-5 extra innings win, before the Mavericks closed out the doubleheader with a 4-1 victory at home.
Game 1: SFA 6, UTA 5 (10 inn.)
The opening game of the midweek doubleheader saw the Mavericks strike first at home as they would score a run in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 lead. The Lumberjacks would get on the board in the top of the third as Mallory Webb would reach base to lead off the third and later advance to third. With two outs, Chloe Reneau would step into the box and had no trouble driving in Webb as she would smoke a ball back up the middle to score Webb from third and cut the UTA lead to 2-1 heading to the bottom of the third. UTA would add a run in both the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 4-1 heading to the fifth inning. SFA would keep the pressure on UTA in the top of the fifth as Mikaelah Burkland would work a six-pitch two-out walk, which allowed Madison Nguyen to send a towering flyball to right center field that hit off the base of the wall allowing Burkland to score and giving Nguyen her first triple of the season to make the score 4-2 in favor of the Mavericks. UTA would respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth to maintain their three-run lead at 5-2 heading to the seventh.
It's not always about how you start a game, but rather how you finish it and the Lumberjacks refused to go down without a fight in this one as they would save their best for last to stun the Mavericks late and force extra innings. Kaylee Paul would send a single through the right side with one out, with Mikaelah Burkland reaching on a fielder's choice one batter later. With two outs, the 'Jacks bats worked some two-out magic to find a way to storm all the way back and tie the game on their last breath. Madison Nguyen would single following Burkland to put a pair of runners on with two outs for SFA. Nguyen and Burkland would both advance on a wild pitch and allowed Hope Lusk to step in with a pair of runners in scoring position. Lusk would make no mistake about it as she would line a single into left field scoring both Nguyen and Burkland and advanced to second on the throw to cut the Maverick lead to a single run at 5-4. Kylie Bishop would waste no time driving in Chloe Reneau, who was reentered as a runner for Lusk, as she would swing at the first pitch she saw and sent a towering flyball to center field that banked off the center field wall, easily scoring Reneau and knotting the game at five runs apiece after seven full innings.
The Lumberjack defense showed off once again in extra innings as following a defensive masterclass in game one of the doubleheader against Tarleton, the 'Jacks defense pulled off another fantastic defensive play to rob a scoring opportunity away at a critical moment. With the bases loaded and only one out in the bottom of the ninth, the Mavericks were looking to end the game, but SFA had other plans as a ball was hit towards Alex Dubose at first base, then Dubose fielded it cleanly and threw a dart home to Emily Land at the plate to get the force out, however, Land would take it a step farther as she would throw immediately back to first base to Ellie Vance who came over from her second base spot to cover the first base bag to complete the 3-2-4 double play and keep the game tied at five heading to the 10th inning.
Although SFA only led once in this game, they would hold a lead when it mattered most to help secure their third straight victory. The SFA offense would break through in extra innings once again thanks to some timely offensive exploits. Kylie Bishop continues to make her presence felt in the SFA lineup as she would smoke a one-out single to center field, with Brittany Coe following suit one batter later as she would send a single up the middle as well to advance Bishop to second. Bishop would show off her speed and aggressiveness as she would steal third shortly after, which set up Alex Dubose with the opportunity to drive in Bishop and give SFA their first lead of the game. Dubose would do just that as she would record an RBI groundout to score Bishop from third and give SFA the all-important 6-5 lead heading to the bottom of the 10th inning. That run would be all SFA would need to claim a come-from-behind victory in game one of the doubleheader as Alexis Telford would pitch a clean bottom of the 10th inning to secure the 6-5 win for SFA.
The SFA offense showcased their contagious hitting in game one of the doubleheader as they totaled 12 hits as a team to record their fifth game this season with double-digit hits in a game. Ellie Vance (3-5), and Kylie Bishop (2-5, R, RBI, 2B) created a terrific hitting duo for SFA as both recorded multiple hits in game one. However, they were not the only ones who got in on the hitting action as seven other Lumberjacks recorded hits as well in game one. Madison Nguyen (1-5, R, RBI, 3B), Chloe Reneau (1-3, R, RBI), Hope Lusk (1-1, 2 RBI), Kelby Robbins (1-2, BB), Emily Land (1-4), Kaylee Paul (1-1), and Brittany Coe (1-2) all joined Vance and Bishop in the hitting party as SFA stuffed the stat sheet with hits. Meanwhile, Alex Dubose (0-2, RBI) would come up clutch late for the 'Jacks as she would drive in the winning run for SFA while Mallory Webb (0-2, R) and Mikaelah Burkland (0-2, BB, 2 R) would score critical runs to help spark the late SFA rally.
Brooke Gainous drew the start in the circle for game one and pitched four innings not issuing a single walk, and inducing six flyouts and five groundouts from the UTA offense before handing the ball over to Alexis Telford. Telford threw six innings of relief allowing just one run and striking out five batters in route to securing her fourth win this season. Alex Dubose and Kelby Robbins formed a dynamic duo splitting time at first base in this one as they combined for 13 putouts, while Emily Land drawing the start behind the dish for SFA recorded seven putouts of her own. The infield trio of Chloe Reneau, Kylie Bishop, and Ellie Vance continued their strong defensive seasons as the three combined for six putouts and nine assists defensively.
Game 2: UTA 4, SFA 1
The second game of the doubleheader offered a much slower pace of play compared to the first game as neither team was able to score in the first two innings. The Mavericks would strike first in game two as well as they would load the bases in the bottom of the third, however, Aydenne Brown did an excellent job limiting damage as she allowed just one unearned run to cross the plate, which gave UTA a slim 1-0 lead after three full innings of play. UTA would add on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-0 lead after five innings. However, SFA would continue to battle back as they would break through on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Madison Nguyen would lead off the sixth with her second triple in as many games, and would later score as Kylie Bishop would single through the left side of the infield to cut the Mavericks lead to 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth. Unfortunately for SFA, they were unable to find the equalizing runs in this one and ultimately fell 4-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Madison Nguyen (2-3, R, 3B) continues to be a hitting machine atop the SFA lineup as she recorded her third multi-hit effort in her last five games and is currently on a three-game hitting streak. Meanwhile, Kylie Bishop (1-3, RBI) continues to rack up the hits since returning to the SFA lineup as she drove in the lone run for SFA in the nightcap of the doubleheader and has recorded a hit in five of her last six games with three RBIs during that stretch. Kelby Robbins (1-3) rounded out the hitters for SFA today as she has now recorded a hit in three of her last four contests. Emily Land (0-1, BB) drew a walk in the fifth inning as she has now reached base in four straight games and has reached safely in six of her last seven games as she continues to lead the team in batting average.
Aydenne Brown drew the start in the nightcap of the doubleheader and continues to showcase her wipeout pitches as she struck out eight hitters over 4.1 innings pitched and has struck out at least five hitters in six of her last seven outings. Kayla Palomino came in of relief of Brown in the fifth inning and was flawless over 1.2 perfect innings pitched as she did not allow a single hitter to reach base and struck out one batter. Brittany Coe drew the start at catcher for game two of the doubleheader and remained busy behind the plate as she led the team with nine putouts.
The Lumberjacks will have a short turnaround as they will return home to the friendly confines of SFA Softball Field this weekend for a three-game weekend series against visiting WAC foe Abilene Christian University. The series kicks off on Friday, April 12th with a single game scheduled for 6:00 p.m. CST, with the series concluding on Saturday, April 13th with an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. CST, with game two of the doubleheader beginning approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
