NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will host the Grand Canyon University Lopes this weekend. The three-game series starts on Friday, March 8th and concludes Sunday, March 10 at Pilgrim's Park. The weekend series starts the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) schedule.
The Matchup
This will be the first time the Lumberjacks and Lopes will play each other since joining the WAC. Stephen F. Austin and GCU did not play last year during conference play.
A Look at SFA
The Lumberjacks will open WAC play at home at Pilgrim's Park this weekend against the Lopes of GCU. SFA is looking to start the conference season off on a positive note, but the Jacks face a tough opening act as GCU was picked to win the WAC conference title in preseason voting.
Nolan Brown leads the Lumberjacks offense with a .326 batting average and tied with Peyton Parker and Colton Griffin for second with 14 hits. Colton Griffin still holds the team lead in stolen bases with 12. Reid Boyett leads the pitching staff with his 20 innings pitched and is tied with Elian Balmaceda for the team lead with 16 strikeouts. Boyett also leads the team with his 4.50 ERA based off the one inning pitched per game rule.
A Look at GCU
The Lopes currently sit at 6-7 overall and are coming off back-to-back losses to Oregon in a midweek two-game series. The Lopes are also looking to reset their season with the conference opener as they travel to Nacogdoches.
Cade Verdusco leads the Lopes offense with his .380 batting average and is second on the team in hits with 19. Daniel Avita leads the Lopes pitching staff with his 3.45 ERA and 15.2 innings pitched. Avita is also in a three-way tie for first on the team with 18 strikeouts recorded.
Broadcast Information
Friday's game will be broadcast on WAC International and Sunday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+. Saturday's game will not be broadcast. You can keep up with all the action on social media or on the SFA athletics website with live stats.
