'Jacks finish off sweep of New Mexico State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Lumberjacks finished off a sweep of New Mexico State today, winning the first game 2-1 and the second game 4-3. SFA moved to 25-21 overall and 13-8 in the WAC, while New Mexico State dropped to 19-24 and 8-13 in the WAC.

Game 1: Pitching once again led the way for the Jacks today as Alexis Telford threw six innings of one run ball. She was great, as she only allowed six hits and struck out five. The only runs the Aggies could get off Telford came in the third inning, as Riley Carley singled, driving in Jillian Taylor. The Jacks did just enough offensively, as they tied the game in the third on a Mikaelah Burkland double in the bottom half of the third, and then took the lead on a Mackenzie Bennett single in the fifth. Bennett had another great game, going 1-3 with a walk and the RBI. With the win, Telford moved to a solid 10-8 on the year.

Game 2: The Aggies struck quickly in the second game of the doubleheader, getting out to a 1-0 lead on a Riley Carley solo home run. Carley had another solid game, going 3-4 to go along with the solo shot. The Lumberjacks wasted no time taking back the lead, as Sydnee Hebert smoked a 2-run homer. In the third, Lexi Benson got in on the action, hitting a 2-run shot of her own, extending the Jacks lead to 4-1. That was the last run of the day for SFA, but it proved to be enough. Sophie Hannabas was solid on the mound, throwing a complete game. The Aggies kept the Lumberjacks fans nervous, as Kayla Bowen hit the game's third 2-run home run of the game, but Hannabas shut the door on the Aggies as she got Carley to line out to right to end the game. Hannabas final line: 7 IP, 8 hits, 1 BB, 4 strikeouts, and 3 earned runs. Five Lumberjacks recorded hits in the game, scraping across just enough runs for Hannabas to finish the sweep.
