Kelby Robbins' RBI single got Alex Dubose home, scoring the first run for the Lumberjacks. Pitching blunders in the second inning began to plague the Bearkats, as Sydnee Hebert and Camryn Middlebrook walked, scoring Benson and Mikaelah Burkland. The Bearkats finally found a run, on Brodie Quinlan's RBI single that scored Julia Herzinger. After four innnings of play, SFA held a 3-1 lead over SHSU. Brooke Gainous threw a complete game. An effective seven innings that yielded only one earned run for the Bearkats. This was Gainous' eighth complete game this season and she is now 8-7, after recording the win. She gave up six hits on 27 at bats and recorded two strikeouts.
Game 2
Game two was a different story for the Lumberjacks. Camryn Middlebrook was able to get on base, with her first inning double. However, SFA would fail to capitalize. Sophie Hannabas had her day cut short, following an unproductive second inning where SHSU would find three runs. RBIs from Hayleigh Carter, Emily Telg, and Ellie Grille gave Sam Houston a 3-0 lead, at the end of the second inning. Sydney Carithers and Madison Nguyen both found fifth inning singles, but the Lumberjacks were unable to bring them in.
SFA was unable to find their footing on the mound throughout the game, as Corie Byrd was brought on in relief for Alexis Telford in the fifth inning. The pitching substitution took place after Telford gave up RBIs to both Hannah Scheaffer and Haleigh Carter. SHSU took a commanding 5-0 lead, at the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bearkats would find one more run, on an Elia Hebel sixth inning RBI double. SFA was unable to make up ground in the top of the seventh inning, falling to Sam Houston 6-0.
