NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated Sacramento State 7-1 to give SFA their sixth consecutive win. The Lumberjacks improve to .500 at 12-12 (WAC 6-4) while the Hornets fall to 12-13 (WAC 2-5).
Joe Richter delivered one of his best performances on the mound this evening against Sacramento State, picking up his first win of the season after going six innings and allowing only one run. The Hornets had a hard time picking up Richter's pitches as he only allowed five hits and didn't allow the one run until the sixth inning.
The Lumberjacks got their first run on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Clayton Loranger led off the inning with a single through the right side that bounced off the Hornets' first-baseman. Loranger then worked his way to third base by stealing second and then advancing on a passed ball. That allowed Tom Biggs to drive a fly ball deep enough to center field to bring in Loranger and give the 'Jacks the 1-0 lead.
Last weekend's SFA Player of the Series, Nolan Brown, stayed hot at the plate and drove in another run in the fourth with a RBI double to left center. The 'Jacks kept the scoring going into the next inning as Cole Hill took advantage of the first two batters reaching base and drove both of them in with a big double to right center. Hill was then able to bring himself in to score in a wild series of events. As Hill was attempting to steal third, the catcher made a wild throw to the bag, allowing Hill to easily come home and give the 'Jacks a 5-0 lead.
Following Sacramento State's lone run of the game in the top of the sixth via a sacrifice fly, Loranger roped a double all the way down the left field line, bringing in both runners that were on base prior to the hit. Loranger's second hit of the game brought SFA's lead to 7-1 heading into the seventh inning.
Skyler Jaco came into relief in the seventh for Richter and shut down the Hornets' bats for the remainder of the game. In three innings, Jaco held Sacramento State scoreless, allowed only two hits, and struck out four. Jaco's appearance included two three-up, three-down innings in the eighth and ninth to give SFA their sixth straight win. Richter and Jaco's stellar performance on the mound today was the second time this season that the Lumberjacks held their opponent to just one run.
After starting conference play 0-4, the Lumberjacks are now 6-4 in WAC play.
Alex Rodgers went 3-for-5 at the plate today while Biggs and Cody Fleischer each picked up a hit of their own.
The 'Jacks and Hornets square off for game two tomorrow at 6:30 as the Lumberjacks look for their seventh consecutive win and the series win against Sacramento State.
