NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball program returns to Jaycees Field to face the Sacramento State Hornets in a three-game series, looking to extend their winning streak and take their third straight WAC series.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks are coming off a three-game sweep against Utah Tech on their home turf and an overall five-game winning streak after taking the last two matches against CBU in the prior series. The hot streak has moved SFA to fifth in the WAC standings with a 5-4 conference record and a 11-12 overall record.
The Lumberjack bats have played a big role in their recent success, as the team has scored an average of 11.8 runs in the last five games. SFA now is tied with GCU for the highest average scoring in the WAC on the season with 7.6 runs per game. The team obtains a .280 batting average and four players now have a .300 average and a .900 OPS. Clayton Loranger leads the way with a .386 average and a .998 OPS.
A big reason for the offensive success has been their ability to hit for extra bases. Out of the 174 total hits, 70 have been for two or more bases. The big hits doesn't come from just a select few, 12 Lumberjacks have now recorded a home run, and eight have hit at least two out of the park this year. Alex Rodgers has hit the most long balls for SFA standing at six coming into the series.
Garrett Gearner continues to perform on the mound when called from the bullpen as he picked up his team-leading fourth win this past weekend with ERA of 2.70 in ten appearances. Gearner's four wins puts him third in the WAC and 25th in the nation. The pitching staff as a whole looks to lower the team ERA of 6.81 this weekend against the Hornets.
A Look at the Hornets
Sacramento State stands at a 12-11 record and a 2-4 conference record. The Hornets are halfway through a road trip, making a stop at Louisiana Tech following a three-game series against ACU where they went 1-2. Sacramento State is 2-4 on road games this season.
Wehiwa Aloy and Gunner Gouldsmith are the bats to watch for in this series as they have the two best averages and OPS on the team. Aloy has produced the most extra bases hits with 13, four of those being home runs. Gouldsmith has been the most productive hitter, getting 24 hits in 55 at-bats (.436). Besides Aloy and Gouldsmith, majority of the team carries an upper .200 average.
Martin Vincelli-Simard is an RBI machine for the Hornets, especially when it comes to the long ball. Vincelli-Simard leads the team with five home runs and 23 RBIs.
The Hornets' pitching staff has a 6.38 ERA as each of their starters with at least three starts all have an ERA of at least 3.00. The bright spot in the Sacramento State bullpen has been Jack Zalasky as he leads the country in saves with seven in ten appearances. In those appearances, Zalasky has a 0.68 ERA, has allowed only one earned run, two hits, and has struck out 20.
