ST. GEORGE, UT - The Stephen F. Austin baseball team is fresh off their first WAC series win this past weekend against California Baptist and now hits the road for another WAC opponent in the Utah Tech Trailblazers. This weekend will be the first ever matchups on the diamond between the two teams.
A Look at the Lumberjacks
The Lumberjacks head into the weekend with the swagger and momentum on their side, taking the last two games of the three-game series against the Lancers last weekend. The 'Jacks now sit at 8-12 in the season and 2-4 in conference play. A sweep of the Trailblazers this weekend would put the 'Jacks over .500 in WAC play as well as on the road as they sit 3-5 on away games.
Don't let the record fool you, the Lumberjack bats aren't one to be messed with. SFA is ranked third in the conference when it comes to scoring runs per game with 6.9, only 0.5 behind conference leader GCU. With a little more help on the defensive side, these Lumberjack sluggers can take this team a long way.
SFA now has five batters with an average over .300, with Clayton Loranger now leading the way with an .405 average, which sits fourth best in the WAC. Loranger's ability to put himself on-base plays a huge role in the Lumberjack's offense. Loranger leads the team in on-base percentage with .488 and is one of two players to have an OPS of at least 1.000.
The WAC Hitter of the Week, Cal Martin, showed off his strength this past weekend against CBU, batting .571 with a grand slam, earning nine RBIs, and scored two runs. Martin's average now jumps up to .323 on the season and he looks to keep his hot bat going into St. George.
Cody Fleischer has been taking advantage of his plate appearances this season as he carries a .333 average, being the fastest Lumberjack to reach ten hits with the lowest number of at-bats. Fleischer has the second-most doubles on the team with five, and already has nine RBIs and nine runs scored in 36 at-bats.
Garrett Gearner has been the bright spot in the Lumberjack's bullpen as in eight appearances, Gearner records a 1.69 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. He's tied with the most wins recorded at this point in the season and has allowed only two earned runs in his 10.2 innings pitched.
A Look at the Trailblazers
The Trailblazers come into the series with a 7-15 overall record and is 2-1 in the only WAC series they have played in so far, which came against New Mexico State last weekend.
Shane Taylor leads the way for the Trailblazers' offense with a .329 average and gets on-base almost half of the time with a .467 OBP. A big contributor to that is his keen eye for pitches outside of the strike zone, allowing him to draw walks and get on base for free. Taylor's 18 walks is seven more than the next highest in line.
Right behind Taylor is Bryker Hurdsman with a .323 average. Hurdsman has the highest slugging percentage and OPS on the team with .523 and .948, respectively. His slugging percentage is credited towards his team-leading seven doubles, which is tied with Taylor, and two home runs. Hurdsman comes up big in situations with runners in scoring position, as he has the second most RBIs on the team with 15.
Tyson Fisher and Sean Keating carry the big bats for Utah Tech, as they both lead the team with four home runs each and each with at least three doubles. With only 13 total hits on the season for Keating, and eight of those hits being for extra bases, his strong contact on the ball has raised his slugging average to .518. Watch for these two Trailblazers to make some big noise on the offensive side.
The Trailblazers have struggled to find their groove on their mound as their team ERA sits at an alarming 7.86. Out of their five starters who have started more than one game, not one has an ERA lower than 5.00. They have allowed opposing offenses to have a .331 average and their biggest struggle has been keeping the ball in the ballpark, as the Utah Tech pitching staff has let up 41 home runs in 22 games.
