NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin defeated California Baptist in both games today. SFA won the first game 3-1 and the second game 4-0. SFA improves to 14-11(3-0 WAC) while CBU falls to 16-13 (0-3 WAC).
Game 1
The first game of the day quickly turned into a pitcher's duel as Alexis Telford went toe-to-toe with Alyssa Argomaniz. The first score of the game did not come until the sixth inning which came off of Mackenzie Bennett's bat as she hit her fifth home run of the season to put the 'Jacks up 2-0. Lexi Benson stepped up and smoked a double into the gap in right center to put a runner in scoring position for Mikaelah Burkland. Burkland hit a single to right field which advanced Benson to third with Emily Land up to bat. Land hit the ball to the shortstop who threw to second to get Burkland out, but the throw to first pulled the first baseman off the bag which meant Land was safe at first and Benson was able to score from third, 3-0. CBU tried to mount a comeback in the seventh as they brought in a run, but Brooke Gainous made a relief appearance and earned the save.
Bennett, Benson, Burkland, and Camryn Middlebrook each recorded two hits. Bennett led the team with two RBIs and Land recorded one. Telford earned her sixth win of the season as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, one run, and striking out one batter. Gainous pitched the final inning and recorded her second save of the season.
Game 2
The second game also saw the first three innings of the game go scoreless. However, SFA's bats came alive in the fourth inning when Bennett and Gaby Garcia hit back-to-back solo home runs to put the 'Jacks up 2-0. Middlebrook walked in fifth inning, then Madison Nguyen placed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Middlebrook to second. Sydnee Hebert stepped up to the plate with a runner in scoring position looking to extend SFA's lead. Hebert did just that as she blasted a home run to right center to double the 'Jacks lead, 4-0.
The three hits recorded by SFA in this game were all home runs hit by Bennett, Garcia and Hebert. Gainous recorded her third complete game of the week, allowing six hits, no runs, and striking out two batters.
SFA will travel to Austin to take on No. 9 Texas on Wednesday, March 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
