
Defensive Effort Leads SFA Past Lamar 70-50

NACOGDOCHES, TX --The SFA women's basketball team held Lamar to just 18.2% from deep in a 2-for-11 shooting performance on the way to a 70-50 win over the Lady Cardinals at home Saturday. SFA's overall record moved to 22-5 and conference record improved to 15-3 with the win.
The Ladyjacks had two players score in double figures, led by Stephanie Visscher, who had 24 points and four assists. Zya Nugent tacked on 17 points off the bench and BriAnna Mitchell added five points, six assists and two steals.
SFA took advantage of excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 19 assists on 28 made field goals. Mitchell's six assists led the distribution list for the Ladyjacks.
The SFA defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 23 Lamar turnovers while committing 13. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Mitchell's two steals led the way individually for the Ladyjacks.

GAME SUMMARY
SFA started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Visscher, to take an early lead with 6:36 left in the first quarter. The Ladyjacks then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 20-10 advantage. SFA relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.
SFA kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 3:28 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Riley Harvey, to increase its lead to 33-25. The Lady Cardinals cut into that lead, but the Ladyjacks still enjoyed a 33-27 advantage heading into halftime. SFA dominated in the paint, scoring eight of its 13 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, SFA continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 44-34 before going on a 7-0 run to expand its lead further to 51-34 with 1:06 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lady Cardinals had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Ladyjacks still entered the fourth quarter with a 54-38 edge. SFA played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 21 points in the paint.
SFA started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Nugent's layup, to grow the lead to 60-38 with 7:15 to go in the contest. The Lady Cardinals narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Ladyjacks still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-50 win. SFA took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
