NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's soccer team rallied from a slow start to post a strong second-half effort in Friday's Southland Conference match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, but ultimately fell by a 3-0 score. SFA moves to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in league play with the result.
Katelyn Termini tallied a game-high nine shots and Sophia Fondren, three to pace the SFA offense, which found itself in multiple positions to score but was unable to convert those chances.
OF NOTE
• Katelyn Termini's shot in the 42nd minute nearly pulled one back for the home side, as it ricocheted off the left goalpost and away.
• Goalkeeper Madeline Talbot saw her first action of the season in the contest, coming in at the halftime break and turning away three shots.
• The Ladyjacks turned up the heat on the offensive end in the second half, outshooting the Islanders 16-4, including putting three shots on frame.
• SFA returns to action at the SFA Soccer Field on Sunday against the Huskies of Houston Baptist. Kick-off for that game is set for 1:00 p.m.
COACH CRITTENDEN'S THOUGHTS
On his team's overall performance on the evening:
"It was a disappointing first half, it was really unfortunate that Corpus was able to convert the two or three moments early on. I thought that we addressed some things at halftime and came out with great energy and execution and were able to flip the script on the shot count. We outshot them 16-4 in the second half, I would've liked to earn a few more corners, because ultimately this game came down to one team converting some of those moments. Ultimately, we're not the first team to face adversity, we're not the first team to have to manage outcomes that are not in our favor, and we've got to keep moving forward and learn as much as we can so as to not carry this over into Sunday."
On the way his team rebounded in the second half to control the offensive momentum:
"I thought their goalkeeper played really well, she had a good night tonight. There's only been a few moments this year where I haven't been pleased with how we responded, I think as a whole we've done that well this year. We need to focus on starting a little faster, be ready to take advantage of those early moments. At the end of the day, I thought we were always in a position to score in the second half, and its unfortunate that we didn't convert. It is frustrating, and it's okay to be frustrated, that's a part of life, and at the end of the day it's all about how you respond. I'm expecting a really good effort on Sunday against a really good HBU team."
