JONESBORO, Ark. - Despite holding leads past the midway point of both the third and fourth sets, the SFA volleyball team was unable to keep its grip on them and suffered a 3-1 setback to Arkansas State Thursday night inside First National Bank Arena.
Playing in its first of three matches at the Arkansas State Invitational, SFA's suffered its first of the season which also marks the first regular season loss by the Ladyjacks since Sept. 1, 2018. Playing their first Sun Belt Conference foe of 2019, SFA hit a season-low .203.
SET ONE | SFA 27, Arkansas State 25
• As has been customary in their battles with the Red Wolves recently, the Ladyjacks never could put a great deal of distance between themselves and their Sun Belt Conference foes through the opening frame.
• Arkansas State enjoyed a pair of two-point leads through the first 10 points of the frame before breaking an 8-8 deadlock with a service ace courtesy of Julianna Kramer.
• Right after that ace, SFA put forth its most sustained surge of offense to move in front by its largest margin of the set. Danae Daron hammered home a pair of terminations during a 7-2 run which also featured a Margaret Dean service ace in order to extend SFA's lead to 15-12.
• Looking to be in control of things, the Ladyjacks fell victim to 4-1 Arkansas State run to fall behind 18-17. The home team's surge was powered by one termination each by Madison Brown and Peyton Uhlenhake.
• Rejuvenated by that run, the Red Wolves refused to go down quietly. Taya Mitchell finished a 3-0 Ladyjack run with a powerful termination that put the visitors ahead 21-20, but back-and-forth play reigned the rest of the way.
• The match was tied at 22, 23 and 24 before the Red Wolves received the first set point opportunity of the night. A termination by Macey Putt was countered by one off the hand of Corin Evans to tie things at 24 and ensure extra
points would be necessary.
• Josei Stanford stepped up for a big-time solo rejection to bring the Red Wolves and Ladyjacks even at 25-all before SFA finally finished the job. Back-to-back kills from Daron and Evans closed out the set and gave the Ladyjacks and early lead.
SET TWO | Arkansas State 25, SFA 21
• A 3-1 start to the set by the hosts ensured SFA would never take the lead at any point in the second frame.
• Dean dumped in a kill and a ball handling error by Cramer helped SFA pull even at 3-3 but that was the final deadlock of the set. Kills by four different Arkansas State players powered a 4-1 run by the Red Wolves which put SFA at a 7-4 disadvantage.
• Five times through the remainder of the set SFA managed to trim the Red Wolves' lead down to one point, but each and every time Arkansas State had a response.
• Ann Hollas capped a run of consecutive SFA points with a kill to make the Red Wolves' lead shrink to 20-19. The home team, however, turned to Timber Terrell who generated a trio of kills through the Red Wolves' 5-2 run to conclude the frame.
• After hitting .261 in the opening frame, the Ladyjacks' attack operated at a clip of just .167 in the second.
SET THREE | Arkansas State 25, SFA 21
• Through the first half of the set SFA was able to assert its dominance. Over the final half of the frame, however, it was the Red Wolves turn to do so.
• Both Hollas and Xariah Williams served up aces through SFA's 5-3 run to begin the frame and after Arkansas State made use of a 4-1 run to cut the Ladyjacks' lead to 8-7, SFA started the process of increasing its lead.
• Mitchell mashed down a kill which kick-started a 7-2 run that culminated with another termination from Hollas. That kill pushed SFA ahead 14-10, but from there the Red Wolves turned the tables.
• Arkansas State relied on Macey Putt (three kills and one ace) as well as Uhlenhake (three kills) to power an 11-4 run which handed the home team a 21-18 lead.
• Consecutive unforced Arkansas State errors helped SFA pull within one, 21-20, but Arkansas State took a 2-1 lead by ending the set on a 4-1 run.
• Remaining consistent, Arkansas State hit .297 in the set, edging out the Ladyjacks' attack percentage of .226.
SET FOUR | Arkansas State 25, SFA 21
• Almost exactly like what happened in the third set, SFA kept the Red Wolves in check early on only to see Arkansas State finish furiously to hand the Ladyjacks their first loss of the season.
• Terrell submitted a solo block as well as a kill during the Red Wolves' 7-4 run to begin the frame before Evans led a loud response by the Ladyajcks.
• One of SFA's four seniors, Evans accounted for one-third of the points during a 12-4 scoring spree by the Ladyjacks. Evans started the run with a kill and finished it with two more while adding a service ace in the middle of it.
• That sizable surge put the Ladyjacks up 16-11, but Arkansas State had the last laugh. The Red Wolves ended the match on a 14-5 run to pull off the upset.
• Terrell pounded down four kills while Putt added three of her own during that match-clinching run.
• SFA hit only .150 in the final set while the Red Wolves stayed level with a .225 attacking clip.
