Senior first baseman one of just two Southland softball players to appear on NFCA All-Central Region Teams
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the first time since 2016, an SFA softball player has been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region as senior first baseman was placed on the NFCA All-Central Region Second Team, announced by the association Thursday morning. One of just two Southland Conference players to appear on the NFCA All-Central Region Teams, Corona continues to rack up honors in her final season donning the Purple and White.
The first Ladyjack to be named the Southland Hitter of the Year since Kayla Gutowski in 2010, senior first baseman Margarita Corona has put up impressive numbers at the plate this season as the conference's top power hitter. Last week, the Tucson, Arizona (Tucson High Magnet School), native would not be tested as she was walked seven times, three of which were of the intentional variety, en route to claiming Southland All-Tournament Team honors. Despite being avoided by opposing pitchers, Corona still managed to hit .500 (3-for-6) for the week with an on-base percentage of .769 and a slugging mark of .667 in SFA's trio of Southland Tournament games.
An honorable mention All-Southland performer in 2018 after transferring to Texas' oldest town from Pima Community College, Corona was selected as Southland Hitter of the Week on April 29 after hitting .750 (9-for-12) in four victories between April 23-28. For the week, she posted a slugging mark of 1.083 while holding an on-base percentage of .800 and tallying six RBI.
Corona currently ranks 75th in the country in total bases (111) and is 55th among all NCAA Division I softball players in on-base percentage (.495) and 65th in walks per game (0.64), while ranking among national leaders in hits (64), batting average (.388), slugging (.673) and home runs per game (0.21). With 12 dingers in 2019, Corona has tied the program's single-season home run record and needs just one more long ball to set the all-time single-season mark.
The NFCA All-Region awards honor softball student-athletes from the association's 10 regions with first, second and third-team selections. NFCA member coaches from each respective region voted on the teams, and all the honorees become eligible for the 2019 NFCA All-America squads.
Conference players and pitchers of the year from member institutions are added to NFCA All-Region third teams if they were not already voted to an All-Region squad. In some instances, limited regional nominations prevent a position from being filled.
The 2019 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at approximately 4 p.m. CST on Wednesday, May 29 via NFCA.org.
