Lindsay Gregory’s eighth-inning RBI single propels SFA to walk-off victory against visiting Cardinals
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – For the second-straight afternoon at SFA Softball Field in Texas' oldest town, the SFA softball team went to an extra inning against visiting Lamar. However, Saturday afternoon the Ladyjacks (23-16, 9-6 Southland) came away victorious as junior catcher Lindsay Gregory roped a walk-off RBI single down the right field line to propel SFA to a 3-2 triumph in eight innings.
Giving SFA its first walk-off win of 2019, Gregory's RBI willed the Ladyjacks to a weather-delayed game three victory over the Cardinals (19-22, 10-5 Southland). The Southland Conference home series finale was impacted by an hour-and-47-minute lightning and rain delay following the first five innings of play.
"We really maintained our focus today, we fought hard and executed late to get the win," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the win. "This was a great series, I know the record doesn't reflect it, but we got a little bit better today. Lauren Becker, (Margarita) Corona and (Lindsay) Gregory were consistent at the plate today. We needed a weekend like this one, where we were tested but improved our level of emotional maturity. We have to be more consistent over the next six weeks if we expect to contend for a title, we have to show up and be the same team every single day."
Lining seven hits in the contest, SFA led through the opening four innings after claiming a run in the first. A two-run top of the fifth gave the visitors a 2-1 advantage before senior first baseman Margarita Corona's solo shot in the bottom of the fifth tied things up at 2-2.
SFA took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning thanks to a two-out throwing error by Lamar following a Becker one-out single up the middle and a single through the left side by senior first baseman Margarita Corona. Sophomore designated player Triniti Kendzior connected for a base-advancing groundout before freshman right fielder Alex Hedspeth reached on the Cardinal throwing error, allowing senior third baseman Lauren Becker to reach home plate.
The next hit of the game would not come until the bottom of the fourth when Gregory singled up the middle with one out. Freshman right-hander Kassidy Wilbur held a perfect game through the first four innings, striking out three and retiring the first 12 batters she faced.
Lamar recorded three of its five hits on the day in the top of the fifth inning when the Cardinals scored both of their runs of the game. Leading off with a single through the left side from designated player Jade Lewis, Lamar got a sacrifice bunt, a walk and then a single to right field from first baseman Taylor Davis. Left fielder Maddy Myers was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to tie things up at 1-1 with two outs, before second baseman Kelly Meeuwsen singled to left field for an RBI.
Trailing 2-1, Corona stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth with one out and cranked out her eighth home run of the season off of a full-count pitch. With the score knotted up at 2-2, the game entered the nearly two-hour weather delay.
Following the lengthy delay, only three combined hits were recorded in the sixth and seventh innings as neither team was able to get a runner in scoring position.
Hedspeth led off the eighth with a single to the shortstop prior to a pair of base-advancing groundouts. With Hedspeth at third base and two outs on the board, Gregory rocked a 1-0 pitch down the right field line to allow Hedspeth to score the winning run for the walk-off victory.
Becker finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Corona and Gregory both went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Wilbur (13-11) struck out five and walked just one, going the distance to pick up her 12th complete game win of the year.
The Cardinals' Lewis turned in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a run scored as right-handed starter Julia Voluntad (6-8) took the loss after tossing all seven and 2/3 innings and striking out two with two earned runs allowed.
