Softball lines season-high 16 hits, uses five-run opening inning to cruise past host Lady Tigers in run-rule rout
Sparked by hot-hitting from multiple players, senior designated player Margarita Corona notched her sixth-straight multi-hit game by going an impressive 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI, two runs scored and a walk. Riding the strong arm of junior right-hander Ashley Kriesel, who fanned 10 batters, redshirt sophomore center fielder Brittany Crawford recorded a 2-for-2 performance with a pair of RBI and a run scored as freshman catcher Mackenzie Bennett went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
"(Ashley) Kriesel had a great outing inside the circle for us today and (Jordan) Llinas closed the game strong in relief," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the game. "We had five different players collect multiple hits on the day, which is great to see. As a team we were consistent from start to finish, which is what our focus is for this week. I'm proud of how we played and competed today."
The Ladyjacks (24-16) held the host Lady Tigers (12-22) to seven hits for the afternoon and limited Texas Southern to just one run in the bottom of the fourth inning that extended the game.
SFA got on the board with one out in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single up the middle from Corona. Moments later, an RBI single to right field by freshman first baseman Cassidy Tucker put the Ladyjacks ahead 2-0. A Crawford two RBI ground-rule double to center field put SFA up 4-0 before senior shortstop Emily Wolfe connected on an 0-1 pitch with two outs for an RBI double down the right field line, giving the Ladyjacks a commanding 5-0 lead at the close of the first.
Following a leadoff hit-by-pitch, Corona got ahold of her ninth home run of the season in the top of the second. Her two-run shot, which cleared the left field fence, allowed SFA to hold a 7-0 advantage. Later in the inning, Crawford successfully stole second base and Tucker took home plate due to obstruction on the base path.
Trailing 8-0, the Lady Tigers put together a trio of hits in the bottom of the fourth and scored their lone run of the game on a one-out RBI single to left field by pinch hitter Zariah Robins.
Tallying four hits in the top of the sixth, the Ladyjacks made it a nine-run game by scoring twice in the inning. A one-out RBI single to left center field by Bennett made it 9-1 before sophomore second baseman Bryana Novegil flied out to left field for a sacrifice fly. Texas Southern would get a hit in the bottom half of the sixth but wasn't able to extend the game with junior righty reliever Jordan Llinas striking out the final Lady Tiger batter to seal the game.
Tucker finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Wolfe was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kriesel (9-5) earned her ninth win on the rubber, walking just two in five innings of work as Llinas struck out one in a full inning of relief.
Texas Southern's Robins turned in a 2-for-3 performance with her RBI and second baseman Ebony Wiltz went 2-for-2. Lady Tiger right-handed starter Chelsea Baxter (2-3) took the loss after just one and 1/3 innings inside the circle, giving up nine hits and six earned runs without a strikeout.
Wednesday's triumph was SFA's third run-rule win of 2019.
