SFA starts second half of Southland play with five-run win, 'Jacks turn three double plays
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Faced with the difficult task of trying to shut down a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team that had put up more runs than any other Southland Conference squad, the SFA baseball team turned to junior left-hander Jacob Stobart to get the job done.
A little less than three hours later, Stobart had put the finishing touches on one of his finest pitching performances of the season to help the 'Jacks start the second half of Southland play off on the right foot.
Roughly 72 hours removed from his last start on the mound, Stobart delivered seven strong innings of one-run baseball and the 'Jacks backed the junior with a six-run attack to claim a 6-1 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference series opener between the two teams Thursday evening at Sullivan Field.
With the win, the 'Jacks reached the 10-win mark in Southland Conference play. That's one more league victory than the 'Jacks had in the entire 2018 season and SFA also tied its win mark from the 2018 season with 18 contests to go.
SCORING SUMMARY
T1 | The only error the Islanders committed in the second game of their nine-game home stand came back to bite the home team. Brandon Uhse reached on a dropped fly ball and with two outs Sean Moore handed the visitors the lead for good by stinging an RBI double down the right field line.
T2 | Looking to pad their 1-0 lead, the 'Jacks wasted no time in string together some hits against Islanders starter Dustin Lacaze. Jake Georgiades led off the frame with a single on a 2-2 offering from Lacaze before Jordan Monacy drove an RBI double to the wall in left field that pushed SFA's lead to 2-0. After Monacy trotted to third on a sacrifice bunt by Clowers, Nick Daley drove the junior in with an RBI groundout to up the 'Jacks' edge to 3-0.
T5 | SFA closed out its scoring by plating three runs in its three-hit fifth inning. Daley and Uhse connected for back-to-back singles to start the frame before Manny Vasquez drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases with no outs. The heart of the 'Jacks' lineup kept the line moving as Moore made matters 4-0 with an RBI single before Josh Campbell drew a bases-loaded walk to push the visitors' fifth run across. Georgiades received credit for his lone RBI of the game when his groundout allowed Uhse to come home and extend the 'Jacks' lead to 6-0.
B6 | Texas A&M-Corpus Christi managed to break up SFA's shutout bid in its three-hit sixth. Itchy Burts and Enrique Sanchez, Jr., started the Islanders' scoring frame with consecutive singles before Stobart got the first out of the inning by getting a line out to left field. Mike Williams drove Burts home with an RBI single through the left side, but Stobart prevented any further damage by getting another flyout and his second strikeout of the game to conclude the sixth.
AT THE DISH
• Seven of the 'Jacks' nine starting position players struck for one hit. Moore was the only SFA player who put forth a multi-hit effort, finishing the night 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
• Uhse scored two of the 'Jacks' six runs while going 1-for-5 to extend his team-leading hitting streak to five games.
• In addition to Moore and Monacy, senior catcher Jarrod Huber came up with a double for the 'Jacks who pounded out eight hits on the night.
• Burts and Sanchez, Jr., did the majority of the Islanders' damage at the plate by combining for six of the team's 10 hits. Burts went 4-for-5 with a run scored while Sanchez, Jr., was 2-for-4. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's three through nine hitters went just 4-for-25 (.160) in the squad's fifth-straight loss.
ON THE HILL
• Stobart picked up his team-leading sixth win of the season by working his way through a season-high seven innings of work. Though he gave up eight hits and struck out just two batters, the junior got a big boost from his defense as the 'Jacks managed to turn three double plays.
• Jeremy Rodriguez, Tyler Starks and Jesus Gamez worked the final two innings and combined to give up three walks and two hits while striking out a pair.
• With his appearance in the bottom of the ninth inning, Starks upped his number of career pitching appearances to 95 for his career. With one more appearance, the senior out of Mesquite, Texas, will tie Richard Folmer's program record for pitching appearances (96).
• SFA chased Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starter Dustin Lacaze (3-3) after just 4 1/3 innings of work. In that span, Lacaze surrendered six runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out three.
• The Islanders' relief duo of Tyler Miller and Zach Rumfield did not let up a hit and combined for four strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
ON DECK
• Another Friday night game means another Friday night start by SFA ace Alex Palmer who goes in search of his first victory since March 22 when the 'Jacks take on the Islanders in game two of the Southland Conference series. First pitch at Sullivan Field has been set for 6:00 p.m.
CARDENAS COMMENTS
On limiting the Islanders' chances to score runs by pitching low in the zone | "They're a good ball club and what you have to try to do is maintain your pressure on them when you go up to bat. Getting early runs on is big and from there the challenge becomes pitching low in the zone so your defense can make some plays behind you. Jacob Stobart did that tonight and really kept his composure which allowed us to really go to work at the plate.
On Sean Moore's move to left field | "He has been really working out there a lot and we thought we'd give him a chance since he's a step faster at times than a few of our other outfielders. He did a great job out there tonight."
On giving Jacob Stobart the series start on just three days of rest | "We wanted to try and keep Alex Palmer on the same schedule and not try to push our Friday night guy on short rest. Unfortunately, that means someone else has to lock in and deliver on short rest and Jacob did that for us tonight. I can't say enough about the courage he had to go out there and throw seven innings on about 72 hours worth of rest."
