Islanders even series at 1-1 by scoring first four runs
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - For the second time in as many nights, the team that put forth more hits than the other did not come out as the victor. Unlike Thursday evening's series opener, however, this time it was the SFA baseball team who found themselves at a disadvantage at the end of the night.
Freshman outfielder Brandon Uhse put the finishing touches on his team-leading 14th multi-hit game with a two-run single in the eighth, but a three-run homer by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the fourth proved to be the swing the Islanders needed to helm them claim a 4-2 win Friday evening at Sullivan Field.
SFA out-hit the Islanders by a 7-5 margin but had to try and mount a comeback after the hosts jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
SCORING SUMMARY
B4 | With one swing of the bat, the Islanders got all the offense they needed to put an end to their five-game skid. A pair of flyouts bookended an infield single by Drake Osborne before SFA starter Alex Palmer issued a walk to Nick Anderson to put another runner aboard. On a 1-1 offering from Palmer, Islanders' catcher Justin Taylor launched a three-run homer out beyond the fence in left to hand the home team a 3-0 lead.
B6 | The third walk issued by Palmer eventually turned into the Islanders' fourth run of the game. To lead off the frame, Palmer issued a four-pitch base-on-balls to Luke Marbach who moved to second on a groundout. After getting Mike Williams in an 0-2 hole, Palmer watched the Islander put a good swing on the third pitch of the at-bat as Williams drove an RBI double to the gap in right-center.
T8 | Facing a 4-0 deficit and with little time to make it up, the 'Jacks went to work right away in the eighth. Jarrod Huber and pinch-hitter Kyle Cullen started the visitors' rally by slapping consecutive one-out single to left-center. After Nick Daley took a seven-pitch walk to load the bases, the Islanders went to the bullpen and produced right-hander David Worrell to face Uhse. After looking at three pitches from Worrell, Uhse turned on a 2-1 offering by the reliever and sent it into left-center for a two-run single that plated Cullen and pinch runner Casen White. Unfortunately, the 'Jacks' rally ended when Manny Vasquez popped up to short before Uhse was gunned down at second on a steal attempt. SFA had two runners thrown out on steal tries in the inning.
AT THE DISH
• Uhse extended his team-leading hitting streak to six games by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in Friday evening's setback.
• Uhse was the only SFA player - and the only individual from either team - to enjoy a multi-hit game.
• Taylor's three-run bomb was one of just five hits the Islanders came up with against Palmer. Two of those hits went for extra bases and two of the three walks Texas A&M-Corpus Christi drew came around to score.
ON THE HILL
• Palmer (3-5) suffered the loss by giving up all five of the Islanders' hits through his six innings of work. The junior struck out four but walked three.
• Right-handed relief arm Austin Roth came in and worked the final two innings to give the 'Jacks a chance at victory. Roth struck out one and retired all six batters he faced during two flawless innings of relief.
• Making his first start of the season, John Gaddis (3-2) fired five frames of three-hit shutout baseball to move above the .500 mark.
• Mason Hopkins lasted 2 1/3 innings and have up both of the 'Jacks' runs on three hits and a pair of walks.
• Worrell's hit given up to Uhse was the only base knock he gave up on the evening. The relief arm struck out a pair through 1 2/3 innings to lock down his team-leading fourth save of the season.
ON DECK
• In search of its first Southland Conference series victory since mid-March, the 'Jacks send senior right-hander Trayson Kubo to the hill in Saturday afternoon's finale. First pitch between SFA and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is set for 1:00 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
