NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball looks to continue its winning ways this week with a pair of home matchups in William R. Johnson Coliseum. The first test to SFA's unblemished 11-0 record at home is the Huskies of Houston Baptist (7-12, 2-7 SLC), who will face the Ladyjacks on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. SFA has been on a roll, winning nine straight games and amassing a 17-3 record overall and an 8-0 mark in league play.
The matchup will be shown on ESPN+, with play-by-play of the game's action provided by Bobby Mauro. Mauro's call can also be heard on the airwaves via FM 94.7 KVLL in the Nacogdoches area. Fans can follow the Ladyjacks on Twitter (@SFA_WBB) for in-game content and video updates as well.
Wednesday's matchup features two teams entering the matchup on entirely different trajectories. The Ladyjacks are looking to add to their league-leading total of 17 wins on the season, while HBU has dropped six of their last eight after a solid run through the non-conference slate. Sixth year coach Donna Finnie has led HBU to a 64-102 record overall and a 35-63 mark in SLC play during her tenure. In conference play, the Huskies have averaged just 62.7 points per game while surrendering 71.4, and are converting on just 37 percent of attempts from the floor in league play.
While finding some comfort in the confines of Sharp Gymnasium (7-4 record), HBU has found the road to be an unfriendly place, as they are 0-8 this season in such games. Preseason All-Conference Second Team selection Amanda Johnson leads HBU with 13.1 points per game, while second year point guard Megan Valdez-Crader has become a second option on offense with 10.9 points per contest.
SFA's advantage at home this season has been nothing short of magnificent, as a perfect 11-0 mark there has helped launch the Ladyjacks into a league-leading 17 wins this season. The Ladyjacks have built up an impressive run of dominance on the hardwood of William R. Johnson Coliseum, outscoring opponents 79.4-51.9 this season. Nine opponents have failed to crack the 60-point mark against the 'Jacks at home this season, with three of those failing to break the 40-point mark. SFA is converting on 47.7 percent of attempts from the field (compared to 33.0 for opponents) and 37.9 percent from beyond the arc (24.8 for opponents), and has forced 20.5 opponent turnovers per game at home.
After averaging close to nine three-pointers per game and coming off a stretch in which the team knocked down 10 or more threes in three straight victories, the Ladyjacks have made just ten treys over the past four games combined, off a total of just 40 attempts. Despite the change in the offense, SFA leads the Southland Conference in field goal percentage (51.4) and three-point percentage (41.0) on the offensive end as well as holding the top mark in field goal defense (31.9) and three-point defense (23.5).
