Vasquez and Campbell finish with two hits apiece
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Getting a stronger offensive outing than that of its SEC adversary, the SFA baseball team out-hit Texas A&M 9-8, but a pair of costly errors helped the Aggies notch a trio of unearned runs that proved to be the difference in the 'Jacks' 5-3 setback at Blue Bell Park Tuesday night.
OFFENSIVE SUMMARY
B1 | The Aggies were able to turn the first of seven walks into the game's first run. SFA starter Seth Campbell issued a five-pitch walk to Texas A&M leadoff man Bryce Blaum who moved to second on a wild pitch and stole third after a pair of outs. After another five-pitch walk, this one to Mikey Hoehner, Blaum and Hoehner pulled off a double-steal move. That move let Blaum swipe home and gave the home team a 1-0 lead.
T2 | SFA did not wait long to answer as Jared Martin and Manny Vasquez each registered singles in the top of the second to put runners on the corners. From there, Sean Moore helped Martin come home by grounding into a double play
B4 | Texas A&M broke the deadlock when Ty Coleman hammered a solo homer down the left field line to lead off the fourth. Derek Wells gave up three more hits to load the bases after the long ball, but managed to escape the frame by giving up just one more run on an RBI groundout off the bat of Hoehner.
T5 | Mounting a rally in the top of the fifth, the 'Jacks got the upper hand on Aggies' reliever Chandler Jozwiak right from the moment he entered the game. Skylar Black got drilled by a 1-2 offering before Antonio Lima laced a sharp single to left field. Jake Georgiades drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases and after Martin's five-pitch walk resulted in SFA's second run of the game, Jozwiak was yanked for Bryce Miller. Miller was able to end the inning by getting Vasquez to fly out.
B5 | The 'Jacks' second error of the game proved to be the most costly. Cody Adams sat down two of the first three Aggies he faced in the frame before Zach DeLoach sent a fly ball to no-man's land in left field. Charging in to try and make the play, Martin instead saw the ball hit off the heel of his glove to score Allonte Wingate who reached on a walk. The Aggies' lead increased to 5-2 after Blaum's two-out RBI single before the frame ended.
T8 | Vasquez started the 'Jacks' rally by ripping a double down the left field line to lead off the eighth. That set up Campbell who pushed Vasquez home with a deep single to the gap in right-center. Within two, Jarrod Huber kept the line moving with a single of his own but Kasey Kalich got out of the inning with a strikeout and a fielder's choice ball.
ON THE MOUND
• Three different SFA arms made their debuts including Wells, Cully Mangus and Jacob Stobart. Mangus tossed a scoreless seventh and faced just three batters while Stobart came on and got the final out in the bottom of the eighth.
• Adams produced the only strikeout of the night by an SFA pitcher. He, Mangus, Austin Hearn and Stobart combined to work the last four innings and gave up just three hits and one walk. The only two runs those four gave up were of the unearned variety.
• Wells worked a game-best 2 2/3 innings for the 'Jacks and surrendered five of the Aggies' eight hits.
• SFA starter Seth Campbell lasted 1 1/3 frames and gave up one run on five walks and no hits. The senior took the loss - his first of the season.
• Bryce Miller (1-0) took home the win after tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Kalich secured his second save of the season by striking out three and giving up one hit in the last 1 2/3 innings.
AT THE PLATE
• Josh Campbell busted out of an 0-for-12 slump at the plate to start the season by finishing with a pair of hits.
• Brandon Uhse went 1-for-5 at the plate and extended his team-leading hitting streak to four games. He and Vasquez - who went 2-for-4 Tuesday night - are the only two players who have registered a hit in each of the team's first four games.
• Blaum and Hoehner each came up with a pair of hits for the Aggies who won their fourth in a row. The former scored two of the team's five runs on the night.
ON DECK
• SFA heads to Arlington, Texas, to take part in the 2019 UT-Arlington Classic. SFA, UT-Arlington and Wichita State are the three teams playing in the classic and the 'Jacks' four-game run in the weekend classic begins Friday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when they take on the host Mavericks at Clay Gould Ballpark.
