Shortstop had pair of successful seasons with the Mean Green, arrives in Nacogdoches with two years of eligibility remaining
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Head coach Nicole Dickson and the Stephen F. Austin softball program announced the signing of junior shortstop Lindsay Gregory to the Ladyjacks' 2018-19 squad Wednesday afternoon. Gregory, who was most recently at Conference USA's North Texas, is the 12th member of SFA's 2018 signing class and joins sophomore catcher Ashton Esparza as the Ladyjacks' second four-year university transfer.
A native of Kingwood, Texas, Gregory enjoyed a pair of successful seasons with the Mean Green in Denton, Texas, starting 104 of 105 games played across her freshman and sophomore campaigns. Hitting at a clip of .298 in her first two collegiate seasons at North Texas, Gregory tallied 88 hits and 43 RBI while scoring 36 runs and stealing 15 bases on 18 attempts. This past spring, she set a single-season school record for sacrifice bunts, laying down 18 and claiming the Mean Green's career record for sacrifice bunts (29) in just two years of play. Clobbering 25 extra-base knocks across her freshman and sophomore seasons, Gregory posted 19 doubles and four home runs with two triples. In the field, Gregory made 213 putouts and assisted on another 137, owning a fielding percentage of .949.
As a freshman in 2017, Gregory earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman Team after hitting .307 with 50 hits, 10 doubles, three home runs and 22 RBI. Playing in 55 games and making 54 starts, Gregory's .319 batting average in conference play ranked second on the team as she owned the second-best slugging percentage (.423) and on-base percentage (.374) among all Mean Green batters. Her 13 multi-hit games were also the second-most among North Texas players. After going 12-for-22 at the plate from March 1-5, Gregory was named Conference USA Co-Player of the Week on March 6, 2017.
Gregory recorded a batting average of .288 during her sophomore campaign in 2018, the third-highest on the team, and notched 38 hits, 21 RBI and 17 runs scored with nine doubles, two triples and a home run. Starting all 50 of the 50 games she competed in, Gregory was the Mean Green's primary shortstop and registered a slugging mark of .409 and an on-base percentage of .371.
Playing her prep career for head coach Lauren Hendrix at Kingwood High School, Gregory was a three-time all-district selection and claimed all-tournament honors at the state championship. After leading the Mustangs to the state finals as a freshman 2013, Gregory played in 67 games over her sophomore and junior seasons, hitting at a .362 clip with 65 runs scored, 53 RBI, 16 doubles, three triples and three home runs. She hit .408 as a sophomore and .316 as a junior, helping Kingwood to a 25-10 record and a Class 5A regional semifinals appearance in 2014 and a 25-7 record and a Class 6A regional quarterfinals appearance in 2015. Gregory was a two-time golden glove recipient and a member of the VYPE Magazine Houston Preseason Top 25.
"We are excited to add Gregory to our roster for this upcoming season," coach Dickson said. "She's a natural competitor and plays extremely hard. Her athleticism and experience defensively is going to add depth to our infield. Lindsay has the ability to make the people around her better. I expect her to be a leader and a high-character player for us who positively impacts our culture and program.
The daughter of Lori and William Gregory, Lindsay has seven siblings, including Collin, Kyle, Lacy, Ryan, Jordan, Blake and Mackenzie. Her twin sister, Lacy, played with Lindsay on the North Texas softball team. She plans on majoring in kinesiology at SFA.
Gregory joins Kaelyn Roberts, Mackenzie Bennett, Cassidy Tucker, Alex Hedspeth, Kaitlyn Boudreaux, Darryan Welborn, Kassidy Wilbur, Ashley Kriesel, Tommi Goodman, Bailey Richards and Esparza as Ladyjacks who will arrive in Nacogdoches to compete on the SFA Softball Field this fall.
This spring the Ladyjacks posted the most victories in a single season in the last 10 years, reaching the 30-win plateau for just the sixth time in SFA's NCAA Division I history. Achieving one of the largest turnarounds in all of Division I softball, the Ladyjacks completed the season with a 31-24 overall record after finishing tied for second in the final Southland Conference standings with a 18-9 league mark. After earning the No. 2 seed in the Southland Tournament, SFA made just its second national postseason appearance by gaining the conference's automatic berth into the 2018 Postseason National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC).
