Huber drives in four, Daley drills two doubles and finishes with three RBI
ABILENE, Texas - In terms of sheer mileage, the trip from Nacogdoches, Texas, to Abilene, Texas, is among the longest the Stephen F. Austin baseball team must embark on during its Southland Conference schedule.
Because of that, the 'Jacks made sure to do everything in their power to get on the road back home as quickly as possible Sunday.
Putting an impressive cap on an weekend filled with offense, the 'Jacks received a three-hit, four RBI performance from junior Jarrod Huber as well as an equal number of hits and two more RBI off the bat of Nick Daley to fuel their 16-3 romp over Abilene Christian.
The game was put in the books after seven frames due to the visitors' lead of 10 or more and with that the 'Jacks completed their first Southland Conference sweep of the season. During the rout, SFA piled up 15 hits and scored 11 of the game's first 12 runs to leave the game free of any drama.
Of SFA's 16 hits, eight of them went for extra bases and in all seven of the eight 'Jacks who recorded a base-knock recorded one of those extra-base hits. Most of the games' runs were provided by a quartet of players - Daley, Huber, Eric DeJesus and Manny Vasquez - who were each plated three times.
Jared Martin finished with a trio of RBI, the first of which came after the freshman beat out an infield single in the first that scored Daley and handed the visitors an early 1-0 lead. Senior starting pitcher Trevor Kiminski did allow the Wildcats to tie things up by surrendering a sacrifice fly off the stick of Derek Scott in the home first, but the 'Jacks' offense made sure a tie was the best Abilene Christian could do.
Starting the 'Jacks' five-run second with a bang, sophomore Skylar Black hammered a solo homer to left that put the visitors ahead the rest of the way. Eric DeJesus came around to score on a wild pitch prior to Huber chasing Abilene Christian starter Colton Brasher with an RBI single that pushed the 'Jacks' lead to 4-1.
Not nearly finished, SFA received an RBI double from Nic Minor followed by Daley's first two-bagger of the afternoon. After swiping third, Daley finished the scoring in the 'Jacks' second by coming home on a passed ball.
Right after Kiminski put a zero on the board by facing only four batters in the second, the 'Jacks put things out of reach. Consecutive one-out walks drawn by DeJesus and Manny Vasquez brought Huber to the dish and the junior started another five-run SFA frame by lacing a two-run double down the left field line.
That double was one of three the 'Jacks rapped in the inning with the second coming off the bat of Daley and scoring Huber. It was Martin who increased the 'Jacks' lead to 10 and made it four-straight games of 10 or more runs for SFA with his two-run double that finished the visitors' scoring in the third.
Staked to an 11-1 lead, Kiminski ran into a slight bit of trouble in the bottom of the third when ACU got two runs back on a pair of doubles and an RBI single, but a Daley-Vasquez-Huber connection ended the Wildcats' third when Nolan Ritchie was thrown out at home for the inning's final out.
Huber, Minor and Daley each registered RBI singles for the 'Jacks in the fourth and Jake Georgiades ended SFA's four-run frame with a sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 15-3.
After two more scoreless innings from Kiminski, Logan Ammons took over in the sixth and continued to keep the Wildcats off the board. With only three outs separating SFA from the win, Josh Evans put an exclamation point on the victory by clobbering a 2-0 pitch beyond the fence in right for a solo homer in the seventh that provided SFA's final run.
Senior Cole Ridgely struck out the side in the seventh to finish with half of the 'Jacks' six strikeouts. Kiminski (1-2), who fanned two and gave up three runs on five hits and a walk, notched his first victory of the season on the hill.
Each of SFA's next four games will take place at Jaycees Field and that stretch begins with Tuesday evening's non-conference battle with Texas Southern. The 'Jacks and Tigers are scheduled to go at it at 6:30 p.m.
