SFA defeats Lady Panthers for second-straight week, Ladyjacks score six runs on eight hits for second road win of season
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – For the second time in as many midweek tilts, the Stephen F. Austin softball team upended Prairie View A&M, this time by a final count of 6-2 at the Lady Panther Softball Field in Prairie View, Texas. The victory is just the second road triumph for the Ladyjacks (14-9) this season and extends SFA's winning streak to six games, its longest since 2015.
"Nani (Clarissa) Hernandez and Jordan Llinas did an excellent job in the circle, attacking the zone and working ahead of batters," head coach Nicole Dickson said following the win. "We were able to work on a defense with (Amber) Landry behind the dish today, which was great to see. I gave freshman Katherine Thompson the start at third base and she did well. We also had Madison Clements back in centerfield, her first game back since an injury in early February."
The Ladyjacks certainly did what they needed to pick up the road win, lining eight hits on offense and giving up just one earned run between the pitching duo of true freshman Clarissa Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Jordan Llinas (Houston, Texas).
"Players like (Autumn) Holloway, (Madison) Selman and (Logan) Daniels had great energy and did a terrific job doing the little things we preach to our players about attitude and effort," continued coach Dickson. "Those things make you proud as a coach, seeing players step up and lead by having a positive impact."
An RBI single to left field by senior catcher Amber Landry (Ponchatoula, La.) got SFA going in the top of the opening inning and was a precursor of things to come from the preseason All-Southland Conference First Team selection. The Ladyjacks then opened up a 4-0 lead in the top of the third when Landry went yard for the seventh time this season, rocketing out her homer for three RBI as senior right fielder Taylor Fraccastoro (Orange, Texas) and freshman second baseman Bryana Novegil (Houston, Texas) scored on the long ball.
A wild pitch by the Lady Panthers in the top of the fourth mounted SFA's advantage to five with junior first baseman Margarita Corona (Tucson, Ariz.) scoring off the errant toss. Prairie View A&M scored its first of two runs in the bottom of the frame when third baseman Kylar Ward-Flowers singled to left center for an RBI, making it 5-1.
The Ladyjacks would tack on one more run in the top of the fifth as Fraccastoro singled to left field for an RBI, allowing SFA to take control of the affair at 6-1. A Ladyjack error in the bottom of the fifth gave the Lady Panthers their second score of the day with third baseman Alexis Freeman claiming the unearned run.
Llinas retired six straight to end the game, including striking out two in the bottom seventh.
Landry finished an impressive 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and a run scored, while Novegil scored a trio of runs and went 1-for-3 with a walk. Hernandez made her first collegiate start and four innings deep on the rubber to claim her first career victory with a trio of strikeouts.
Ward-Flowers led Prairie View A&M with a 2-for-3, one RBI performance as starting pitcher Ashley Higgins (1-5) took the loss after three complete innings of work.
"Overall, it was nice to work on some things before this weekend's series with Nicholls," Dickson added. "I'm really proud of our underclassmen pitchers for taking care of business today."
