Full WNIT Bracket
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Good news came to the Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team on Monday evening, as the team accepted a bid to the Women's National Invitation Tournament. SFA's opening round matchup with George Mason, at a time yet to be announced, on Friday will mark SFA's fifth WNIT appearance in program history, and first since the 2014-15 season when the 'Jacks traveled to face TCU in an opening round matchup.
"We are excited that this team gets the opportunity to take the court together again in the WNIT," said SFA head coach Mark Kellogg. "We have had an outstanding season and playing in the postseason is always one of our program goals. We have put together back-to-back years of 25+ wins and postseason appearances. Playing in the WNIT allows us to continue our season and build on the future."
SFA will face the Patriots in Fairfax, Virginia, on Friday, the second time in as many seasons that the two teams have met. The Ladyjacks bested George Mason last season in Fairfax by a 77-76 score, and own a 2-0 edge in the all-time series between the two teams.
Continuing a campaign in which the 'Jacks amassed a 25-6 record on the season and a 16-2 record in Southland Conference play, SFA will be making its 26th postseason tournament appearance in the first round matchup. The Ladyjacks have earned a total of 18 NCAA Tournament appearances, five WNIT appearances and 3 WBI appearances.
The Patriots are making their third postseason appearance on the strength of a program-best 23 win season. They also tied a nation-best with 16 home victories at EagleBank Arena. In previous appearances at the WNIT in 2001 and 2004, the Patriots accrued a 0-2 postseason record.
