Ladyjacks held to just one hit in loss but defense forces seven Aggie base runners to be left on
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Southeastern Conference's Texas A&M proved why they are ranked No. 6 in the nation according to the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll Wednesday evening, defeating the Stephen F. Austin softball team 4-0 at the Aggie Softball Complex in College Station. The Aggies (5-0) allowed just one hit in the game and tallied nine of their own in the home shutout.
The Ladyjacks (3-2) could not get anybody on through the first four innings of the game as Texas A&M right-hander Trinity Harrington retired 12 consecutive SFA batters to begin the game. The Aggies scored a pair of unearned runs in the opening frame and got a run in each the second and fourth innings.
A RBI single to left field by Texas A&M first baseman Tori Vidales and then a Riley Sartain RBI sacrifice fly to right field gave the home team a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Aggie center fielder Erica Russell doubled to left field in the second inning to setup a Kaitlyn Alderink RBI single down the right field line, giving Texas A&M a 3-0 lead through two. In the bottom of the fourth, Vidales singled to left field to pick up her second RBI of the evening and make it a 4-0 score.
Junior designated player Margarita Corona (Tucson, Arizona) reached on an Aggie fielding error in the top of the fifth inning, representing the Ladyjacks' first base runner of the game. SFA's lone hit of the game came moments later when senior right fielder Autumn Holloway (Cypress, Texas) singled to left field. Following a fielder's choice and then a hit by pitch, SFA loaded the bases before another fielder's choice play ended the inning. The fifth was the only inning the Ladyjacks were able to get a base runner on as Texas A&M's Harrington retired six-straight to end the game.
SFA's pitching staff showed poise throughout the game against the Aggies' hitters as the Ladyjack defense made several great plays and forced Texas A&M to leave a total of seven base runners stranded. In the third, the Aggies loaded the bases with no outs but back-to-back plays from freshman shortstop Emily Evans (Santa Fe, Texas) to senior catcher Taylor Fraccastoro (Orange, Texas) and a diving catch in left field by senior Madison Selman (Lufkin, Texas) got SFA out of the inning without any damage.
Senior right-handed pitcher Makayla Sikes (Gilmer, Texas) (2-2) tossed the opening three frames and took the loss, while freshman Clarissa Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas), sophomore Jordan Llinas (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Autumn Anderson (Fort Collins, Colo.) each put in an inning of work inside the circle.
Texas A&M's Vidales went 2-for-2 at the plate, while left fielder Keeli Milligan went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Harrington (2-0) finished with five strikeouts in seven complete innings to claim her second win of the season.
