Ladyjacks notch season-highs in goals (5) and points (14)
NACOGDOCHES, Texas -- The Stephen F. Austin soccer team had a chance to make Senior Night special for its lone senior Breanna "Breezy" Moore. They did just that and more with Moore leading the charge, as her brace of first-half goals powered SFA to a 5-0 win over Sam Houston State on Friday at SFA Soccer Field. Moore opened the game's scoring in the 8th minute and would strike again in the 22nd minute, part of a four-goal scoring spree that the Ladyjacks posted in the first half. With the win, SFA improves to 5-8-3 (3-5-3 SLC) and puts itself in a good position to secure an SLC Tournament berth.
After a pregame ceremony in which Moore, the team's lone senior this season, was honored for her accomplishments and accolades as a Ladyjack, the game opened up well for SFA. Needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive, the 'Jacks were the aggressor from wire-to-wire in the contest, and set to work immediately building up a 20-4 shot advantage in the contest. A nice combination play in the eighth minute set off the magical night for Moore, who received a well-placed pass from Sophia Fondren as she moved towards goal. Bearkats goalkeeper Christina Hendershot charged out to meet Moore, who slipped a low, rolling shot past Hendershot and into goal to put SFA on top. The goal was the second of the season for Moore, who also netted the game-winner in last Friday's win over Incarnate Word.
"When your senior leadership can step up and finish goals to inspire your team, it puts you in a position to get the result you want", said Crittenden about Moore's performance on the night. "I'm certainly very happy for her, happy for her family and when you start thinking about the memories and legacy that she'll have, tonight will certainly be up there with some of her best memories."
Staying aggressive, the 'Jacks continued to take shots at goal, and in the 22nd minute, Moore struck again, this time collecting a rebounded save of a Katelyn Termini shot and firing it high into net from close range to double the lead. With the Bearkats their heels, the 'Jacks struck again in the 31st minute, as Fondren took a pass from Katie Jennings, got an open lane down the center of the field and launched a scintillating strike into net from some range to make it 3-0.
Looking to put their own stamp on senior night in the 42nd minute were a pair of freshman in Ryka Shea and Teia Haynes. Shea subbed into the contest in the 38th minute to spell a teammate, then quickly got into the fray, slipping a cross into a waiting Teia Haynes, who fired the ball into the net for her first career goal. The assist from Shea was also her first as a Ladyjack.
After building up a first-half lead of four goals, the Ladyjacks used the second half as an opportunity to rotate in players, but did not let down on the intensity, launch eight shots in the stanza and adding a fifth goal in the 61st minute. A rapid fire sequence of shots saw an attempt by Destiny Davis blocked on the goal line by the Bearkats defense, then a follow up shot by Fondren was knocked away by a superb one-handed denial by backup goaltender Abby DeLozier, then finally Carli Arthurs took a shot that beat DeLozier for the game's fifth goal and her first of the campaign. Arthurs would nearly double her tally in the 82nd minute, launching a rocket of a shot that beat DeLozier but ricocheted away off the crossbar.
"Tonight was all about finishing the moments that allow you to take control of the game", added Crittenden. "With the appreciation for those moments early on we tilted the game in our favor, and with how we were playing defensively I thought the third goal put us ina. really good position to see the game through. We played some good, solid tactical soccer tonight."
Moore, finished the night with four points off her second and third goals of the season, while Fondren added three points off a goal and an assist. Arthurs accrued two points, while Termini, Shea and Jennings each tallied singular assists. Goalkeepers Allyson Halliday and Maddie Talbot combined to record SFA's fifth shutout of the season, with each playing a half and Halliday being credited with the win.
