NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin’s softball team travels to Arlington, Texas on Wednesday with fingers crossed for sunshine and dry fields. SFA and UTA will play a single game at 6:00 p.m. before SFA heads home to host conference opponent Nicholls.
The last time the Ladyjacks and Mavericks faced off in 2012, when UTA was part of the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks split the two game series against the Mavericks, being shut out, 2-0, in the first game, and then coming back to win the second, 2-1, with a walkoff RBI single in the bottom seventh. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Ladyjacks, giving them the momentum they needed early in conference play.
Last Time Out: The last time SFA saw the field was over a week ago in the Mizzou Tournament in Columbia. Several days of down pour saw SFA’s game against Texas Southern cancelled last week. The rain continued throughout the weekend ruling the field at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi unplayable in what would have been SFA’s conference opener. The Ladyajcks have 22 games under their belt so far in the 2017 season, and are led by senior Brittany Lewis, who had a .362 batting average from her 69 appearances at the plate. She had tallied 13 runs, eight RBI, six doubles, and three homeruns so far this season. Following Lewis, is junior Amber Landry with a .356 batting average. Landry has claimed a .575 slugging percentage with 11 runs, 10 RBI, five doubles, a single, and three homeruns.
Scouting UTA: UTA went 2-1 against ULM to open their Sun Belt conference action last weekend. The Mavericks dropped Game 1, 3-0, in eight, but then responded back nicely to to defeat the Warhawks 9-3 in Game 2. The Mavericks squeezed off a walk-off victory in Game 3 thanks to a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt by Aileen Garcia in the 15th inning. The game was the longest UTA softball game since 1985. Throwing all 15 innings was Sam Clakley, tying the Sun Belt record for most innings pitched in a game.
Next Up: SFA will be back in Nacogdoches this weekend to finally open their conference play against Nicholls. The Ladyjacks and Colonels will face off in a three game series starting Friday, March 17. First pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m. Games Two and Three will be on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. start.
