STARKVILLE, Miss. – Stephen F. Austin faced Georgia State first thing on Saturday morning at the Bulldog Kickoff Classic. The Georgia State Panthers struck first in the first inning after SFA made a tremendous double play from freshman Madison Selman to sophomore Lauren Becker to the senior Britany Lewis at first. The Ladyjacks had the potential to cut the Panthers lead to only a run in the fourth when junior Amber Landry singled through the left and Becker swung a single the other way in right, but a ground out ended the inning for SFA. Georgia State answered back in the bottom of the fourth claiming their third run of the game.
SFA got another chance in the seventh for a comeback after Becker got a free pass to first and junior Taylor Fraccastoro followed up with a single to third. Sophomore Emily Wolfe then singled through the right side to bring Becker home and tack on the RBI. The effort would be short lived as the Ladyjacks could not overcome Georgia State’s three runs.
In game four of the tournament, SFA held their ground in their second match up against Mississippi State. The Ladyjacks once again beat their opponent in the hits column. They out hit the Bulldogs 6-5. Lewis earned her first homerun of the season in the first inning. From her two at bats, Lewis homered on the first and was walked on the other. Junior Amber Landry got the team-high two hits in the game. One was a double after Lewis’s homer, and the other was a single in the third. Juniors Tanna Huie and Emily Wolfe had the other two hits for SFA.
The Ladyjack defense was unstoppable has they completed 19 put-outs behind junior Callee Guffey at the mound. The two teams were tied through six innings, until Mississippi State got on the lucky side of a double in the seven, which brought in the game winning run.
The final game Sunday was a tough battle of the pitchers. Junior Makayla Sikes allowed only one hit in the second match up against Western Kentucky and struck out five batters. WKU's scored two runs, one off a homer in the fourth and the other was walked in on a bases loaded situation. SFA had three swings at the ball, one a double from Lewis, a single from Becker, and another single in the third by freshman Madison Clements.
SFA will participate in their second road tournament of the year on Feb. 17-19 in College Station, Texas. The Ladyjacks will first face New Mexico on Friday at 12:15 p.m. and then Texas A&M at 3:00 p.m.
