NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin head women's basketball coach Mark Kellogg announced the addition of the second of three new players for the Ladyjacks for the upcoming 2018-19 season on Wednesday afternoon. Combo guard Heaven Hamling (Grand Rapids, MN) will jin the Ladyjacks after the end of her prep career at Grand Rapids High School.
"We couldn't be more thrilled with the 2018 recruiting class", said Kellogg. "We firmly believe that these student-athletes will make our program extraordinary both on and off the court. All three of these ladies excel in all phases of their lives. The Ladyjacks definitely got better today!"
Hamling will join the Ladyjacks after finishing her career at Grand Rapids High School in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The 5' 8" guard has averaged 18.6 points per game across 106 varsity games and will bring great shooting range to the 'Jacks. Having started her varsity career in eighth grade, Hamling is the first player in her school's history to eclipse 2,000 career points, and enters her senior season with 2,091.
"Heaven is a dynamic player with great court sense", said Heaven's high school coach Kristine Hamling. "She handles the ball well and makes great decisions on the floor. Heaven has great shooting range so she is able to hit big shots from far out as well as shots inside the perimeter. She also makes great passes to her teammates as she is pushing the ball down the floor in transition."
Hamling has put up some gaudy shooting numbers in her prep career, including a junior campaign where she averaged 21.3 points per game on 46 percent shooting from the field. Heaven was recently named one of her region's "Top 5 Players" by Five Star Hoops, and one of the "Top Five 2017 Summer Players" by Northstar Girls Hoops.
"Heaven is one on of the most dynamic players I've been fortunate to coach", explains Minnesota Stars club coach Joshua Hersch. "I've also never coached anyone as dedicated to the game as her. She has unlimited range, well above average court vision, and is a very steady, high IQ player. No one is more of a "gamer" than Heaven. I can't wait to continue to watch her career at the next level, she's going to accomplish big things."
In Hamling, Kellogg is bringing in not only a knockdown shooter and scoring threat, but also a high character individual that will contribute to the Ladyjack tradition and carry herself well in the program.
"We are extremely excited to have Heaven join our program", says Kellogg. "Heaven is an exceptional basketball player and an even better person. She will fit perfectly into our family. Heaven can play on and off the ball, can shoot it from anywhere, her court vision is fantastic and her basketball IQ is tremendous. She plays for her mom, Kris, at Grand Rapids HS and played for Josh Hersch of the Minnesota Stars travel team so we know she has had great coaching. We are excited about the 2018 recruiting class and Heaven will be a big piece of our program moving forward."
