Ladyjacks Reign In Mustangs at Home Behind Sterling Defensive Effort, 97-34
11/28/2017 6:59:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SFA forces a season high 31 turnovers in strong defensive effort
NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Entering Tuesday night's matchup between the high-scoring offense of Central Baptist College and the solid defense of the Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team, something had to give. The SFA defense held true in a stalwart defensive performance, throttling the Mustang's in a 97-34 victory at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
On a night when the Ladyjacks weren't as sharp as they would've liked, the defense was there to pick up the slack, holding Central Baptist to just 34 points on 18.5 percent shooting from the field, as well as notching a season-high in blocked shots, with five. The win improves SFA to 5-1 on the season and is the team's fifth straight victory.
Kia Fisker tallied her first career double-double, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the game. She paced an all-around effort by the Ladyjacks, as six players tallied double-digit points in the contest.
After compiling a 5-1 record in greener pastures before heading into the midweek bout in Nacogoches, the Mustangs found no room to roam against the Ladyjacks, who pressured or harassed the majority of CBC shots, and held them to season lows in field-goal percentage (10-54, 18.5 percent) and three-point percentage (4-19, 21.1 percent). After the Mustangs scored 13 points in the first quarter, the Ladyjacks clamped down defensively, holding Central Baptist College without a field goal from the 7:55 minute mark of the second quarter to the 7:05 minute mark of the third quarter.
During that span, the Ladyjacks turned a 28-16 lead into a 56-23 lead via a run that saw them outscore the Mustangs 28-7. From that point on, the 'Jacks continued to turn over the Mustangs, resulting in an ever growing margin in the contest. SFA would lead 80-28 at the end of three quarters of play after outscoring Central Baptist 34-8 in the stanza, with the 34 points marking a season-high for points in a quarter for SFA.
Such was the defense for the Ladyjacks that it fueled a substantial part of their offense on the night. Turnovers led to 36 points for SFA, and 27 points were accrued on the fast-break. A noticeable edge in athleticism was the catalyst for an above average number of transition points for SFA, combined with the edge in height and size over their opponents. Overall, the Ladyjacks converted on 49.4 percent (38-77 of their attempts from the field and 30.4 percent (7-23) from beyond the arc, while outrebounding CBC 52-36.
Doing much of their damage down low, the Ladyjacks built up an imposing edge in points in the paint (46-6). Hauling down 17 offensive boards, the Ladyjacks tallied on 17 second-chance points on the evening.
SFA will look to defend home court again on Saturday against South Dakota. That game is set for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
