SFA falls despite out rebounding Kansas State on offensive glass, 13-4
MANHATTAN, Kansas – The Stephen F. Austin women's basketball team hung with Big 12 foe Kansas State for the majority of Friday's contest at Bramlage Coliseum, before dropping the opening game of the 2017-18 season 74-49. The Wildcat's length, as well as a uncharacteristically poor shooting night from the Ladyjacks doomed them in the contest, as the 'Jacks shot just 26.6 percent from the field.
Stevi Parker opened the campaign just short of a double-double, hauling down 11 rebounds to go along with nine points to lead the team. Alyssa Mayfield scored seven points, while classmate Marissa Banfield chipped in six. Imani Johnson and Chanell Hayes each added five points in the contest.
"Stevi did very well as the team did not", said SFA head coach Mark Kellogg." She is our best player and an all-conference kid for us. We expect her to get a lot of rebounds and score a lot of points for us. If she had shot a little bit better I think she would have played a little better. She rebounded about as well as she normally does."
The opening minutes of the contest were unremarkable for both units, as the teams combined to go just 1-8 from the floor. Hayes would open the scoring for SFA at the 7:22 mark in the first quarter on an assist from Kennedy Harris, before a quick five points from K-State saw the Ladyacks fall behind 7-2. After taking that lead, however, the Wildcats would not score a basket for the next four minutes of action. That allowed SFA to climb back into the game and take its first lead of the game on a Parker jumper with 4:58 remaining in the first quarter.
That lead and another a short while later on a Riley Harvey layup would be short lived, as K-State rallied from its poor shooting start to finish the quarter at 50% from the field, and would own a 21-15 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, the Ladyjacks opened the quarter with a Riley Harvey layup to trim the deficit to four points, only to see the Wildcats score five straight points to open it back up to nine with 7:12 left to play in the quarter. Later in the quarter, the 'Jacks got their first triple of the contest from Kennedy Harris to pull them within six at 29-23 with 3:08 left to play. Following a 5-1 run by the home team, the Ladyjacks sandwiched two pairs of free throws around a Wildcat trifecta and would go intot he halftime break trailing K-State 37-28.
In the third quarter, the Wildcats took control of the game, outpacing the 'Jacks 21-9 behind 62 percent shooting for the quarter. The 'Jacks would hit two triples in the quarter, but they came on nine attempts, as the team shot just 18 percent in the third and would trail 58-37 entering the fourth.
SFA tallied 12 points in the fourth quarter—only four less than K-State—but the damage was already done, and the deficit too large to overcome. Overall, the wildcats did much of their damage on the defensive end, forcing 20 turnovers (leading to 20 points off those turnovers) and using their substantial team height advantage to record nine blocks on SFA.
"Their length bothered us", said Kellogg. "We do not get to replicate that in practice because we do not have their length. We knew they were going to play that zone, but we thought we were prepared for it. We did not make shots, we did not move the ball, and we got stagnant. That is probably to credit to them. They extended the zone a little bit and got us uncomfortable. We played around the three-point line all night, we never got below the zone and I think their length had something to do with that."
K-State was led by Kaylee Page and her 18 points (4-9 3-pt) and seven rebounds. The Wilcats shot 48 percent (24-50) from the field in the contest. Despie giving up a significant size advantage to the home squad, SFA tied K-State for overall rebounds, with 40, and pulled down a 13-4 advantage on the offensive glass, leading to 11 second-chance points.
All 12 players saw action in the game, including all four freshman. Three of those players (Mayfield, Banfield and Aaliyah Johnson) would score their first career points in the game as well.
Next up for Stephen F. Austin is the home opener at William R. Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches on Tuesday, in which the team will play Coppin State.
