HAMMOND, La. – Stephen F. Austin was able to manufacture runs on Saturday one at a time, but it was not enough to get the series win over Southeastern Louisiana as the Lions were able to rally over the final three innings to win 4-2.
Alisa Hamilton got things rolling for SFA (18-24, 9-10) in the third inning by leading off the inning with a single. She stole second and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. She then scored on a sacrifice fly by Shalie Day for an old-fashioned manufactured run and to take the lead1-0.
Another run would come across the plate with some small ball by the Ladyjacks in the fifth. Day singled to start the inning, and Heather Hollingsworth stole second as a pinch runner. Brittany Lewis would drive her in with another single to go up 2-0.
SLU (17-22, 9-12) answered back with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a walk, sacrifice, hit and a throwing error.
More small ball and stolen bases by the Ladyjacks helped extend the lead back to two runs with Hamilton driving in Nicole Wooten, who was pinch running for Jordan Garza and stole second base to get in scoring position.
The Lions would be able to tie it up with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth, however. Three hits, one of them a double, and a walk helped SLU tie it up at 3-3 heading to the seventh inning.
SFA would leave Day stranded on base after opening the inning with a walk.
Then, SLU would rally for the win. Carlie Thomas was able to get the first two batters out to start the bottom of the seventh, then gave up back-to-back singles. The next two batters both battled to a full count and were able to draw walks and bring in the winning run.
Hamilton led the Ladyjacks with another 3-for-4 performance at the plate. She scored one run and drove in another. Day was 2-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice. Thomas allowed six hits in 6.2 innings with eight strikeouts and five walks.
The Ladyjacks return home for their final series of the season at SFA Softball Field. SFA will take on Lamar with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and Senior Day at 1 p.m. Sunday. With just six games remaining in conference play, teams will be fighting for position in the conference standings to qualify for the Southland Conference Tournament.
