SFA Lands Three On SLC 1980s All-Decade Team

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Southland Conference announced on Tuesday their 1980’s All-Decade Women’s Basketball Team and three former Ladyjacks were selected to the 20-member squad. Portia Hill (1988-90), Annie Norris (1984-88) and Connie Cole (1986-90) were all selected to the team that consisted of players in the SLC from 1982-89 seasons.
Hill, a post and native of Palestine, Texas, is a member of the Ladyjacks Hall of Fame and was twice named the SLC Player of the Year (1988-89, 89-90) as well as a two-time SLC first-team selection (1988-89, 89-90). Hill finished her SFA career second all-time in career points per game (23.6 ppg), field goal percentage (.616) and rebounds per game (11.7). She was a member of the 1988 Jones Cup Team and the 1989 World University Games. In her final season Hill was a 1990 Kodak All-American and a member of the 1990 U.S. National Team.
Hill had a stellar offensive 1989-90 campaign, scoring 718 points (23.2 ppg) on 283 made field goals, both marks the second-highest in an SFA single-season. That year the Ladyjacks went 28-3 overall under head coach Gary Blair and 14-0 in conference play, advancing all the way to the West Regional of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Maryland. SFA climbed as high as No. 6 in the NCAA rankings that season.
Norris, a post and native of Sulphur Springs, Texas, is also a member of the Ladyjacks Hall of Fame and became the first Ladyjack to win the SLC Player of the Year award in the 1987-88 seasons. Also a 1987-88 SLC first-team selection, Norris is second all-time in SFA history in career points (2,062) made field goals (830) and rebounds (1,360). She is also third all-time in field goal percentage (.570), free throws made (402) and rebounds per game (11.3). Norris still holds the SFA single-game rebounds record with 27 in a contest in December of 1984.
Cole, a post and native of Snook, Texas, was a member of three different SLC champion Ladyjack teams that stretched over the course of 1988-90. Cole was a two-time SLC first-team selection, being named to the teams in 1988-89 and 89-90. She still leads SFA in career field goals made (865) and is fourth in all-time points (1,975) and sixth in career rebounds (979).
