WACO, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks lost a pair of tightly contested ballgames on day two of the Fairfield Inn North–Texas Shootout Saturday afternoon at the Southwestern Region Little League Complex.
Following a 3-1 loss to North Texas, SFA fell 2-1 in eight innings to Texas Tech. The Ladyjacks (4-10) will be back in action one more time tomorrow against UTEP in the fifth-place game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game 1: UNT 3, SFA 1
UNT 3, SFA 1
SFA managed just one run on five hits and left the bases loaded in the sixth inning in a 3-1 loss to North Texas (5-6). Angela White (1-4) took the loss for the Ladyjacks, allowing three earned runs on six hits in three innings of work.
The Mean Green broke open a scoreless game in the third inning with two runs on four hits, including an RBI double by Jackie Miller that gave North Texas the initial 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Lisa Johnson increased the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single.
After White allowed another run in the fourth, SFA was finally able to get something going offensively in the sixth inning on a Cadie Weaver RBI single.
North Texas starting pitcher Brittany Simmons (4-1) was able to limit the SFA damage though, allowing just the one run in seven complete innings and striking out a season-high seven.
Game 2: Texas Tech 2, SFA 1 (8 innings)
After tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Ladyjacks saw their comeback bid fall short against a red-hot Texas Tech team, allowing the winning run in the eighth inning in game two of the afternoon.
Texas Tech (11-4), who began the eighth with a runner on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule, used a sacrifice bunt to move the go-ahead runner to third base with one out. Mikey Kenney then hit a sharp ground ball to shortstop that scored Kermitria Ward and proved to be the game-winner.
Brittany Talley, who pitched six innings in relief for Texas Tech, then retired SFA in order in their bottom half of the eighth for the win. Kaitlyn Mixon (0-1) was the hard luck losing pitcher for SFA, allowing just one earned run on six hits in eight innings of work.
SFA was actually being no-hit into the seventh inning before Charlotte Singleton led off the seventh with a single and later scored the game-tying run on a clutch RBI single.
