NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In what proved to be one of the most physical games of the early season, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks soccer team answered the call with a gritty 1-0 victory over previously undefeated UTEP Miners Friday evening at the SFA Soccer Complex.
"I think tonight's one of those games where we'll look back a couple months down the line this season and say that's where we became a team," SFA head coach Tony Amato said. "We went through a lot of adversity tonight and different players stepped up in roles they're not exactly accustomed to and were terrific. This was a very hard game against a good team and I'm extremely happy with the result."
SFA has now won consecutive matches and improved to 2-2-0 on the year while UTEP dropped to 3-1-0.
Freshman forward Chelsea Raymond scored the lone goal in the fifth minute off a beautiful feed from Kylie Louw, allowing Raymond to sprint past the last defender in the open field and beat UTEP freshman goalkeeper Sarah Dilling.
The goal was Raymond's second of the season and of her career and was the first goal allowed by UTEP all season. Louw was credited with her third assist of the season.
That would prove to be all SFA needed on a night where both teams combined for 23 fouls and two yellow cards.
SFA goalkeeper Lacey Lee recorded two saves on the night in picking up her second win of the year. The Ladyjacks outshot the Miners 15-8 and 7-2 on goal. Raymond led the way with five shots, three on goal.
Four different UTEP players all had two shots a piece but a majority of the night was spent on the other side of the field.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 9 at Louisiana Tech, followed by a home match Sunday, Sept. 11 versus Houston Baptist.
