NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head softball coach Gay McNutt has announced the hiring of Alex Meng as an assistant coach. Meng replaces Craig Snider, who left to take a similar position at Florida State.
"It did not take long for us to realize four years ago that Alex was not only a natural coach, but also a valuable piece to our team," McNutt said. "He has learned a lot since coming to our program and we look forward to him having even more of an influence in the years to come."
Meng has spent each of the last four years working directly with the Ladyjacks as a student assistant. The son of a high school softball coach and younger brother of former Ladyjack Malina Meng, he was an influential part of the best four-year run in program history, a run that included a 2008 Southland Conference Tournament title and trip to the NCAA Tournament, as well as SFA's first-ever conference title in 2010.
Working alongside the Ladyjack coaching staff the past four seasons, Meng served as first base coach the past two seasons and was tutored by hitting coach Craig Snider, who quickly helped turn one of the Southland's worst offenses into one of the best in a short amount of time. In just one year's time, the Ladyjacks finished the 2008 season ranked in the top three in the SLC in 15 offensive categories, including leading the league in runs scored (269), hits (443), runs batted in (239), triples (15), total bases (673), total plate appearances (1,861), at-bats (1,618), walks (163) and sacrifice bunts (49).
He also was the primary point man for field maintenance to SFA Field, a role that will continue in his new capacity. The Shepherd, Texas, native will also have an amplified role in recruiting as well as the implementation of camps.
Meng graduated in the spring of 2011 from Stephen F. Austin with a bachelor's of science degree in kinesiology and a minor in biology. He will continue his education at SFA in pursuit of a master's degree in kinesiology with a scheduled graduation date of spring of 2013.
