NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Houston Baptist used two hits and a pair of walks to push across a run in the top of the seventh inning for a 1-0 win over Stephen F. Austin Wednesday at SFA Field. The win was the Huskies' second this season against SFA, both victories coming by a combined total of three runs.
The Ladyjacks fall to 8-26 on the year with the non-conference defeat, while HBU moves to 23-8.
Huskies starter Jammie Weidert (9-6) went the distance, shutting SFA out on three hits, though the Ladyjacks left eight runners aboard, including five in scoring position.
HBU finished with six hits in the game but didn't find the scoreboard until Mollye Mlcak came home on an RBI single to center field by Kate Maddock with two out in the seventh. Mlcak had singled earlier in the inning, then moved into scoring position when Sara Corcoran drew a walk.
SFA got its first hit of the game from Lauren Luetge with two out in the bottom of the fourth. The Ladyjacks then got something going in the fifth. Lacy Liles singled to right with one out, then Nicole Wooten followed with a bunt single down the third-base line. Both runners moved into scoring position when Elizabeth Arana grounded out to Weidert, but the Huskies escaped the inning on a foul pop by Jessica Arana.
In the sixth inning, Amber Price was hit by a pitch to lead things off. She stole second after a fly out to center, then took third after the second out was recorded. Krista Hallmark drew a walk, then stole second to put two Ladyjacks in scoring position, but Charlotte Singleton grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
Carlie Thomas started and pitched the first five innings for SFA. She held the Huskies scoreless on three hits and three walks with two strikeouts before giving way to Leutge to start the sixth. Luetge (0-1) allowed a run on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts in her first pitching performance of the season.
SFA will try to stop its current five-game losing streak this weekend when the Ladyjacks play a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
