FOR STARTERS
Brandon Schneider's second season under helm as the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks basketball head coach begins this Friday when they travel to Monroe, La. to take on the Warhawks. SFA is coming off a 12-18 season in which they went 9-7 in conference play and lost in the first round to the No. 3 seed Central Arkansas.
LAST TIME OUT
The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks used a collective effort and displayed their talented depth in a 94-58 exhibition victory over Henderson State Saturday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. Senior guard Tammara Marion led the way for the Ladyjacks with a game and team-high 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point territory. The Ladyjacks shot a sizzling 51 percent from the field (36-of-70) and were on fire all night from beyond the arch, shooting 44 percent (11-of-25). SFA limited the Lady Reddies to only 37 percent shooting and won the turnover battle 18-32.
THE WARHAWKS
ULM added seven new faces to a roster that went 16-15 overall last season and 9-7 in the Sun Belt for the Warhawks all-time winningest coach Mona Martin. This will be the Warhawks only home game for quite some time as they will not return to the Fant-Ewing Coliseum till Nov. 30 versus McNeese State, a span of six straight games on the road.
vs ULM
SFA holds a commanding 41-14 series lead over ULM and has won seven of the last 10 meetings, including a 72-71 overtime thriller in the two team's last meeting in 2006 in Nacogdoches.
COVERAGE
Friday's game will not be broadcasted via television or radio.
UP NEXT
The Ladyjacks have a much more favorable non-conference schedule as opposed to last season, including the home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 16 against Grambling. Following another home game against Wiley College (Nov. 19), the Ladyjacks will then hit the road for the Southern Miss. Tourney.
SCHNEIDER'S SECOND SEASON: In his first full season as head coach of the Ladyjack basketball program, Brandon Schneider led SFA to a 12-18 overall record and a 9-7 mark in conference play. The Ladyjacks clinched a trip to the Southland Conference Championship Tournament and nearly pulled off an upset of No. 3 Central Arkansas in the first round before falling 64-58. The Ladyjacks led the conference in offensive rebounding with 16.8 per game. The second-year head coach will have higher expectations after assembling a signing class that's ranked 35th in the nation according to Premier Basketball Report, of which includes four McDonald's All-American Nominees.
PRESEASON POLLS: With one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, the Ladyjacks earned four first-place votes in the coaches' poll and three more in the SID poll; however, each poll has UTSA in the top spot in the league's West Division. On the East Division side, defending champion McNeese State was picked atop the listings with nine first place votes in the coaches' poll and nine in the SID poll. Central Arkansas (2) and Lamar (1) were the only other East Division teams to garner first-place consideration in either poll.
MARION PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND: Tammara Marion was named to the all-Southland Conference preseason first team on Wednesday while the Ladyjacks were selected to finish second in the SLC West according to the preseason polls of league coaches and sports information directors. Marion, who was a second team all-conference selection last year, ranked third in the conference in 2010-11 in scoring (16.1). The Houston, Texas native led the team in 3-point percentage (.364) and ranked second in the conference and 14th in the country in free throw percentage (.880).
RECORD WATCH: Senior guard Tammara Marion is on the verge of becoming the alltime three-point leader in SFA history. Marion is just five three-pointers behind Dayna Redd's all-time mark of 178. Last season Marion led SFA with 78 made shots from beyond the arch.
FOREVER YOUNG: This year's Ladyjacks squad will see the incorporation of six freshmen to a team that returns only three seniors.
