HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks held Georgia Southern to only 28 percent shooting and got another outstanding bench performance to take down the Eagles 49-40 Friday afternoon in the Southern Miss Thanksgiving Tournament at Reed Green Coliseum.
With the victory, SFA improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 1991-92 season when Gary Blair led the Ladyjacks to a 28-3 season en route to becoming Southland Conference champions.
SFA senior Tammara Marion scored a team-high nine points Friday, including the 178th three-pointer of her career to tie Dayna Reed's all-time school career record. She was helped in the scoring department by Brittney Matthew and Annette Davis, both of whom scored seven points each off the bench.
For the fourth time this season the Ladyjacks' bench outscored their opponent, this time by a 19-8 margin. SFA's defense forced 23 turnovers and took advantage by outscoring the Eagles 23-5 off turnovers. Freshman center Porsha Roberts also had a career-high five blocks performance.
The Ladyjacks (4-0) took a 26-18 lead into halftime and never looked back, leading by as much as 13 points but never trailed the entire afternoon.
GSU (1-3) was led in scoring by Janay Wilson, who scored a game-high 13 points.
The Ladyjacks will play again tomorrow in the tournament championship against the winner of Friday evening's Southern Miss/Jacksonville State game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
