FOR STARTERS
The Ladyjacks have started the season 2-0 with balanced scoring in both victories thus far. SFA will be looking to move to 3-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season and the 11th time in school history.
LAST TIME OUT
Freshman center Porsha Roberts scored a career and team-leading 12 points in a balanced SFA scoring attack to help the Ladyjacks get past Grambling State, 71-53 Wednesday evening at the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA (2-0) also received double-digit scoring efforts from Tammara Marion (10 points) and Courtney Conwright (10 points). The Ladyjacks outshot the Lady Tigers (1-1) from the field, 46 percent to 36 percent, and used the three-point shot to their advantage. SFA went 8-of-12 from beyond the arch compared to only 2-of-12 shooting from three-point territory by Grambling State.
THE LADY WILDCATS
Wiley College (4-0) took down Texas Collge on Tuesday and did so by playing superb defense, allowing Texas College to shoot only 21 percent from the field and 1-of-17 from three-point territory. Each Dariana Santos and Shantae Hewins scored 14 points to lead the Lady Wildcats in scoring. Texas College also had 21 steals and still managed to win despite being outrebounded 52-36, including 24-9 on the offensive glass.
vs WILEY COLLEGE
Saturday marks the first ever meeting between SFA and Wiley College. COVERAGE Saturday’s game will be streamed online at www.sfajacks.com. UP NEXT The Ladyjacks will travel to Mississippi for the Southern Miss Thanksgiving Tournament (Nov. 25-26) where they will face Georgia Southern on Nov. 25 at 2:30 p.m. and will play either Southern Miss or Jacksonville State the following day.
DOMINANT BENCH: The Ladyjacks have proved right off the bat that this year’s squad has all the potential to be a balanced team that relies on depth to carry the scoring load. SFA’s bench has now outscored its opponents 69-19 in two games, including a 31-12 edge against Grambling.
RECORD WATCH: With two more made three-pointers on Wednesday, senior guard Tammara Marion is on the verge of becoming the all-time three-point leader in SFA history. Marion is just two three-pointers behind Dayna Redd’s all-time mark of 178. Last season Marion led SFA with 78 made shots from beyond the arch.
ROBERTS BREAKS OUT: Perhaps the top signee of Coach Schneider’s 2011 signing class, freshman center Porsha Roberts bounced back from a quiet season opener with a team and game-high 12 points (5-of-8 from the field), while also collecting eight rebounds and two steals.
STRUGGLING AT THE LINE: While SFA has already made 48 trips to the charity stripe this season, they have struggled to fully take advantage. The Ladyjacks have made only 31-of-51 at the line for a clip of .607. Last season SFA shot .695 at the line and .678 in the 2009-10 season. PRESEASON POLLS: With one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, the Ladyjacks earned four first-place votes in the coaches' poll and three more in the SID poll; however, each poll has UTSA in the top spot in the league's West Division. MARION PRESEASON
ALL-SOUTHLAND: Tammara Marion was named to the all- Southland Conference preseason first team on Wednesday while the Ladyjacks were selected to finish second in the SLC West according to the preseason polls of league coaches and sports information directors. Marion, who was a second team all-conference selection last year, ranked third in the conference in 2010-11 in scoring (16.1). The Houston, Texas native led the team in 3-point percentage (.364) and ranked second in the conference and 14th in the country in free throw percentage (.880)
