FOR STARTERS
The Ladyjacks are coming off a season-opening road victory at Louisiana-Monroe and now return home for their home opener against Grambling State. Stephen F. Austin will be looking to start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2009-10 and for the 18th time in program history.
LAST TIME OUT
The Ladyjacks had seven players score five or more points en route to a 68-58 win over the Warhawks at the Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The Ladyjacks (1-0) bench dominated the Warhawks by outscoring them 38-5, including a team-high 10 points from sophomore Annette Davis. SFA limited ULM to only 38 percent shooting, including 1-of-9 from three-point territory and forced 27 turnovers while collecting 15 steals.
THE LADY TIGERS
Grambling State is coming off a season-opening 91-31 victory over a depleted Paul Quinn College squad that brought only five players to the game and finished with four players the final 2:14. Grambling led 53-12 at halftime and were led in scoring freshman guard Dayla Threatt (12 points) while senior forward Jasher Blocker, freshman center Bria Venson and senior Markisha Patterson all had 10 points each.
vs GRAMBLING
SFA leads the all-time series against Grambling State, 4-2, including a 69-64 overtime victory over the Lady Tigers last season. Four of the six contests have been decided by five points or less and both of Grambling's wins in the series have been by one point.
COVERAGE
Wednesday's game will be broadcasted via radio on Q107.7 FM.
UP NEXT
The Ladyjacks will host Wiley College on Saturday, Nov. 19, which will mark their final home game of November. Following Saturday SFA will travel to Mississippi for the Southern Miss Thanksgiving Tournament (Nov. 25-26) and then a road contest at Houston Baptist on Wednesday, Nov. 30.
SECOND UNIT STRENGTH: The Ladyjacks proved right off the bat that this year's squad has all the potential to be a balanced team that relies on depth to carry the scoring load. SFA's bench outscored ULM's 38-7 including a team-high 10 points from forward Annette Davis.
RECORD WATCH: Senior guard Tammara Marion is on the verge of becoming the alltime three-point leader in SFA history. Marion is just four three-pointers behind Dayna Redd's all-time mark of 178. Last season Marion led SFA with 78 made shots from beyond the arch.
GETTING TO THE LINE: SFA shot 30 free throws in the season-opening win at ULM, something that was accomplished only three times in 2010-11. As a team the Ladyjacks shot 20-of-30 (66.7%) but the fact that they were aggressive is a good sign this early in the season and can help an offense that has so many new faces and is still trying to find a rhythm.
FOREVER YOUNG: This year's Ladyjacks squad will see the incorporation of six freshmen to a team that returns only three seniors. Five of those players made their SFA debut against ULM, including center Porsha Roberts who started and blocked two shots.
PRESEASON POLLS: With one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, the Ladyjacks earned four first-place votes in the coaches' poll and three more in the SID poll; however, each poll has UTSA in the top spot in the league's West Division.
MARION PRESEASON ALL-SOUTHLAND: Tammara Marion was named to the all- Southland Conference preseason first team on Wednesday while the Ladyjacks were selected to finish second in the SLC West according to the preseason polls of league coaches and sports information directors. Marion, who was a second team all-conference selection last year, ranked third in the conference in 2010-11 in scoring (16.1). The Houston, Texas native led the team in 3-point percentage (.364) and ranked second in the conference and 14th in the country in free throw percentage (.880)
