FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin freshman Angela White was named Monday the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week, according to a release by league officials. The award is the first of White's career and marks the second Pitcher of the Week honor earned by a Ladyjack this season.
White picked up two wins in SFA's three-game sweep against A&M-Corpus Christi over the weekend. She held the Islanders to two runs on four hits in a five-inning 10-2 win in the second game on Friday. White then came on in relief in the ninth inning of Saturday's finale. She entered the game with the bases loaded and one out. After pushing a run across wit a hit batsman on her first pitch, she recorded two straight outs to escape the inning without further damage. The Ladyjacks won the game, 4-3, in the bottom of the ninth on Jessica Arana's two-run homer. In all, White recorded five strikeouts with one walk in five-and-two-thirds innings pitched.
White has a 3.00 ERA and an 11-3 record on the season. Her 11 victories rank fourth in the Southland Conference, and she leads the team with three shutouts.
Junior Monika Covington earned the team's first Pitcher of the Week award on March 9, when teammate Kayla Gutowski took offensive honors for an SFA sweep.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Tuesday night when they take on Texas A&M in College Station. The game against the Aggies is set for a 6 p.m. start.
