OMAHA, Neb. - Despite a 24-point effort from sophomore Tammara Marion, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks dropped a 76-65 decision at Creighton Friday evening at Sokol Arena in the opening round of the WNIT. The Ladyjacks end the season 18-11 overall.
Creighton started the game on fire knocking down their first four shots to take a 10-0 lead. While the Bluejays were flying, SFA stumbled out of the gate knocking down only one of its first eight. Junior Toni Davis got SFA on the scoreboard with an 18-footer with 17:15 on the clock.
After the slow start Ladyjacks settled down and battled their way back into the game. Sophomore Tammara Marion was a big reason for the offensive turnaround. Marion scored five consecutive buckets and finished the half with 18 points. Due to Marion's efforts on the floor SFA was able to pull within three, 25-22, with 6:18 remaining in the half, but Creighton answered with an 8-2 run to build an 11-point lead.
The Ladyjacks immediately battled back with a run of their own. The Ladyjacks scored the final 14 points of the half, taking their first lead of the game on a three-pointer by junior Ebony Alexander with 18 seconds remaining in the half. The Dallas, Texas native finished the half with two field goals, both threes.
The Ladyjacks finished the half shooting 16-of-40 (.400) from the floor, while Creighton cooled to 42 percent. Despite a height advantage for the Bluejays SFA outrebounded their hosts in the opening 20 minutes, 22-21.
The second half remained close, but the Bluejays made one final run late, and SFA was unable to answer. Creighton pushed it advantage to a game-high 15 points and was able to hold the lead. The Bluejays were sparked by 16 points and seven rebounds from Sam Scheutt.
The Ladyjacks finished the game 26-of-74 (.351) from the floor, while Creighton shot 43 percent. The Bluejays won a narrow margin on the glass, 47-41.
Marion led SFA with 24 points, only one point shy of her career high. Sophomore Schera Sampson added nine points and 10 rebounds, and Alexander added nine points and eight boards.
