NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Two seasons removed from the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Division I Championships, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team is projected to finish second in the Southland Conference. The Ladyjacks garnered the second-highest point total in preseason polling of league head coaches and sports information directors to earn top two billing in the polls for the second time in as many years. SFA was projected to win the Southland in 2009.
The 2010 Ladyjacks return five Preseason All-Southland Conference First-Team selections, more than any other team in the league. That distinction was good enough to earn them 84 points in the sports information poll and 91 in the head coaches poll. SFA garnered one first-place vote in each survey and is second to two-time defending league champion Texas State in both polls.
The Bobcats took 99 points and nine of 11 first-place votes among league SIDs and 99 points with nine first-place nods in the head coaches voting. UTSA, Sam Houston State and McNeese State trailed SFA in the third, fourth and fifth spots in both polls. The Roadrunners finished only two points back of the Ladyjacks in the SID polling but got just 68 points in the survey of head coaches.
The Ladyjacks will open the 2010 season on Feb. 12 when they begin play in the Mississippi State Bulldog Classic. SFA's first home action is a doubleheader against North Texas on Feb. 17. The Ladyjacks open Southland Conference play at home on March 2 with a three-game series against Sam Houston State.
